Sen. Kaminsky & State Selects Cory Nichols For Presidential Scholar Nominee

“I could not have been prouder to nominate Oceanside High School’s Cory Nichols and I am even more thrilled that Commissioner Elia has selected him to be part of the Presidential Scholars Program,” said Senator Todd Kaminsky. “He is a leader in and out of the classroom and sets a strong example for his peers. His wealth of accomplishments are proof that hard work and passion for one’s community can make a difference at any age.”
 

While Cory is in the top 1% of his class, he continues to dedicate his life outside of school to bettering the lives of his neighbors. After being exposed to hunger and unemployment in his community, Cory took it upon himself to make a difference. In 2012, he founded “‘C the Difference: Cory Cares,” a non-profit organization that helps ensure pantries across Long Island are stocked with food.

“Cory is a wonderful, bright young man with a limitless future. We are so proud of him and all he has accomplished, not only in his academics but in his campaign to end hunger on Long Island,” said Geraldine DeCarlo, Oceanside High School Principal.

The Presidential Scholars Program, established in 1964, recognizes the nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors on the basis of outstanding scholarship. Students are nominated by their state for consideration into the Program. Students who choose to apply to the program will be considered to move on in the selection process, and the Commission on Presidential Scholars will then select the 2017 U.S. Presidential Scholars. Scholars will receive an all expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to attend a ceremony in their honor.
