Senator Murphy Partners With Phelps Hospital And Local Community Groups To Sponsor Free Bi-Lingual Health Fair

Sleepy Hollow, NY - A language barrier should never impede anyone's chance for better health care. With that in mind, Senator Terrence Murphy partnered with Phelps Hospital, Open Door of Sleepy Hollow, St. Teresa of Avila Church, and El Centro Hispano on June 2 to provide a free health fair that included bilingual information and wellness services.

"There is a growing need for bilingual services, particularly in the field of health care," said Senator Murphy. "We wanted to bridge the language gap and bring preventive health care and vital health information to our Spanish speaking families in the Sleepy Hollow area. These are hard working families who sometimes skip going to the doctor to take care of their family's needs. Anything we can do to care of their health care needs is well worth it."

The wide range of services included diabetes screening, HIV testing and counseling, exercise demos, blood pressure screening, and information about dental services and WIC (Women, Infant & Child) Program. Bi-lingual staff members were on hand to provide health screenings and answer questions. El Centro Hispano provided a virtual army of enthusiastic volunteer students who pitched in to register guests and help staff the information tables. Phelps Hospital provided a fascinating and sobering exhibit depicting the debilitating effects of long-term smoking on the lungs.
