Statement from Senator Anna M. Kaplan, Chair, Committee on Commerce, Economic Development, and Small Business, in Support of Responsible Economic Development

Senator Anna M. Kaplan

February 8, 2019

“As Chair of the Committee on Commerce, Economic Development, and Small Business, I have a solemn duty to ensure that New York State is taking a thoughtful approach toward responsible economic development, one that promotes the growth of high quality jobs paying a living wage, while ensuring that local communities have a voice in the process and a stake in the outcome.

Our state is facing a serious revenue shortfall that highlights the importance of a robust and diversified economy, which we need to support the many programs and services New Yorkers rely on.  We can’t afford to say that New York is closed for business, or we risk a real erosion of our tax base, and an unacceptable burden being placed on local taxpayers.

The people who elected me Senator did so with an expectation that I will look out for their best interests, and make decisions about issues that impact their lives with great consideration and care.  I approach every decision I make in my official capacity as Senator with the solemn understanding that I work for the people, and it is for that reason that I will continue to support responsible economic development efforts that support and enhance our communities across Long Island and New York State.”
