Senator Persaud Applauds Canceled Shutdown of L Train

On Jan. 3, the Governor announced the cancelation of the proposed 15-month full closure of the L train, for repairs of damage caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The original plan, set to start on April 27, would have affected around 250,000 commuters. However, after consulting experts, Gov. Cuomo said the restoration of the tunnel — specifically, the Canarsie Tunnel — will instead be conducted via a new design that does not call for a shutdown of the tubes, except for one on some nights and weekends.

“I am delighted that there is an alternative way to reconstruct the L train and Canarsie Tunnel that will limit the negative impact on ridership,” Senator Persaud said. “I look forward to the completion of the project and hope that other much needed upgrades to the subway system can be done in the same manner.”
