New York State Senate unanimously adopted a resolution commemorating Ramadan. State Senator Iwen Chu, first Asian American woman to serve in the New York State Senate, introduced the resolution with Senator Kevin Thomas, first Indian American to serve in the New York State Senate.

This resolution recognizes the significance of Ramadan as the holiest month in the Islamic calendar and is observed starting March 23, 2023 to April 21, 2023. Ramadan is a special month of the year for over one billion Muslims throughout the world. The community has a daily period of fasting, nightly prayers at the Mosque, provide charity and read the Quran. This resolution details the practices of Ramadan and highlights the power of the last ten days.

Senator Chu represents many of the Muslim communities in neighborhoods such as Bay Ridge, Kensington, Bensonhurst and Bath Beach. Across southern Brooklyn, many countries are represented through the diversity of the Muslim community like Yemen, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Morocco, and many more.

“It's an honor to introduce this Resolution commemorating Ramadan and wishing Muslim communities Eid Mubarak! I am proud to represent the diverse Muslim communities from Kensington, Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst and Bath Beach. Ramadan is a time of reflection, worship, and charity. These vibrant communities come from many different countries and speak many diverse languages and dialects. It really shows the beautiful diversity that makes New York City so special. Bay Ridge is home to the largest Middle eastern/Muslim community.” said New York Senator Iwen Chu. “Many in the Muslim community have dedicated much of this month to giving back through food drives and community events. I hope this Ramadan brought peace and may your prayers be accepted. Eid Mubarak!

“I am proud to introduce this Resolution commemorating Ramadan as the holy month comes to a close and send our warm wishes to the Muslim community of the State of New York.” said New York Senator Kevin Thomas. “During this time of self-reflection, we must come together to embrace the spirit of community and unity and highlight the rich cultural heritage and diversity of our neighbors.”

Senator Chu has presented the Resolution at Iftars to local Brooklyn organizations such as Arab American Association of New York, Women’s Empowerment Coalition, and Balady Halal Market.
