Griffo statement on request by NYC Mayor Adams to have state force communities to accept illegal migrants

New York State Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-C-Rome, released the following statement today regarding a report that New York City Mayor Eric Adams is requesting that the state use an executive order to force communities to accept illegal migrants:

“This latest attempt by Mayor Adams to force communities outside of New York City to take in illegal migrants is absurd. New York City welcomed this problem when they declared themselves a sanctuary city and should have to deal with the consequences.

Some localities that have accepted migrants have indicated that doing so has posed challenges. While many communities in the state have demonstrated a willingness and interest in welcoming and integrating legal refugees and immigrants, local governments in Oneida, Madison, Herkimer and Chenango counties and elsewhere do not have the resources to deal with this influx of people.

Immigration has been a longstanding federal issue that has challenged many administrations and Congresses and cannot be addressed state by state. As I have stressed repeatedly, we need to review and overhaul our nation’s problematic immigration policy to ensure that communities, states and our nation are not overburdened.”
