Statement From Senator Mattera On Proposed Gas Over Ban

In her recent State of the State address, Governor Hochul doubled down on ideas that were rejected through efforts of local leaders and industry experts during last year’s budget discussions. Specifically, she is once again calling for an all-too-fast ban on all mixed-use fuels for both heating and cooking in homes while neglecting the impact it will have on our residents.

This type of action limits the choices our families have and that will lead to higher costs. This type of policy will cost jobs for our hardworking men and women of labor. And this type of repeat attempt displays a lack of respect for those who fought last year and forces them to once again have to work to stop these shortsighted policies.

Banning natural gas so quickly will – according to experts – overburden our electric grid, harm our economy and negatively impact our families.

As the ranking Republican on the New York State Senate's Energy Committee, I want the state to work with leaders in the unions, the industry and the community to come up with a sensible plan to avoid repeating the fiasco of last year.
