Albany, NY--Senator Jim Tedisco (R,C-Ballston Lake) and Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner (D-Round Lake) today honored an outstanding skier from South Glens Falls High School Shayla Byrne, who captured the 2025 New York State Girls Giant Slalom Championship on February 24, 2025, at Gore Mountain in North Creek.

Tedisco and Woerner welcomed her to the Floor of the Senate and Assembly Chamber and presented her with a joint legislative resolution they authored and passed in both houses celebrating Shayla’s state championship season.

The giant slalom is an alpine skiing competition that involves racing between sets of poles or gates.

Shayla’s victory capped off a spectacular season, being the only skier to break the one-minute barrier in both runs of the girls' giant slalom, posting times of 59.74 seconds in the opening run and 57.32 seconds in the second generating a combined time of 1:57.06

Her time of 1:57.06 was nearly 2.24 seconds ahead of her closest competitor, which is a significant margin in the sport of skiing.

Shayla was previously recognized by the Times Union as a First Team All-Star.

Shayla has a weighted Grade Point Average of 97.83, has received an RIT Women in STEM Award, and is also an accomplished lacrosse player. She will play this fall at Grove City College, where she will double major in International Business and Supply Chain Management.

“Shayla Byrne is a true champion in every sense of the word as an athlete and as a student scholar.  We are proud of all Shayla has accomplished and wish her the best as she graduates and heads to college,” said Senator Jim Tedisco.
