NEW YORK, NY – On Monday, December 15, New York State Senator Kristen Gonzalez announced her Manhattan Community Safety Plan, which was informed by the concerns most often relayed by constituents, to provide next steps and solutions to make our communities safer for everyone. Signees of the plan include Assemblymember Tony Simone and Councilmember Harvey Epstein.

Senator Kristen Gonzalez said, “Common-sense street safety measures like universal daylighting result in a decrease of traffic violence and a decrease of pedestrian deaths — it’s proven by research. What these bills represent is a multi-pronged approach to addressing the real life consequences of not doing more in our city to build out real street safety measures."

Assemblymember Tony Simone said, “To achieve real public safety that is felt by all members of our communities throughout Manhattan, action must be coordinated between the City and State. Through investing and reforming our mental health system, continuing to take illegal guns off our streets and redesigning our streets, this plan lays out the blueprint to address the safety concerns so many of us feel. I thank Senator Kristen Gonzalez for her leadership in preparing this report and look forward to working with her in Albany to pass legislation addressing each of the areas contained in this report."

Councilmember Harvey Epstein said, “Real public safety means strengthening every part of the system: expanding mental health support, improving our subway infrastructure, creating safe streets and sidewalks, increasing access to affordable housing, and preventing gun violence and hate crimes. Senator Gonzalez’s Community Safety Plan moves us toward a safer, more supportive city, and I’m proud to stand with her in delivering meaningful change for the residents of Council District 2.”
