NEW YORK, NY — Today, New York State Senator Kristen Gonzalez lauded the announcement by Governor Hochul of the installment of protective platform barriers in Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) stations in her district.
Governor Kathy Hochul announced the MTA had installed protective platform edge barriers at 56 subway stations. Halfway through 2025, the MTA is on track to deliver on installing barriers at more than 100 subway stations by the end of the year. This directive was part of a larger set of initiatives Governor Hochul announced in her State of the State address to protect subway riders and workers.
The MTA also continues to upgrade stations with brighter, safer LED bulbs. LEDs are now installed in 342 stations, on schedule for all 472 subway stations to be upgraded by the end of the year. Safety in the subway system continues to improve with overall major crimes dropping by 3 percent from the same period last year and by almost 10 percent when compared to pre-pandemic levels.
Senator Gonzalez specifically highlighted MTA stations in her district that would see the protective barriers including First Ave – (L train stop), 33rd St (6 train stop), and 28th St (6 train stop). This follows a meeting on public and community safety that Senator Gonzalez participated in shortly after assuming office, with other Manhattan elected officials .
Senator Kristen Gonzalez said, “The installment of these protective platform barriers will help New Yorkers including my constituents feel safer as they travel all across our city. This is an important public safety investment and will only help us boost the increase we have seen in subway ridership. I am grateful for the installments in stations in my district and look forward to continuing to partner with the MTA and the Governor to ensure our neighbors feel safer wherever they go.”
