(Binghamton, NY) – Today, Senator Lea Webb (SD-52) announced that she has secured $815,000 in state funding for the Southern Door Community Land Trust, Inc. The funding was awarded through the New York Senate’s Local Community Assistant Program (LOCAP) and will aid in building rehabilitation.

Since 2019, the Southern Door Community Land Trust, Inc. has worked tirelessly to expand access to resources and empower vulnerable communities in Broome County. As a community-led nonprofit, the organization acquires and oversees land to ensure homes remain permanently affordable for working families and future generations. By prioritizing resident ownership, community stability, and long-term affordability, the Southern Door Community Land Trust, Inc. is building a stronger and more equitable housing future for our region.

“Securing $815,000 in state funding for the Southern Door Community Land Trust is an important step toward revitalizing our community and preserving affordable housing,” said Senator Lea Webb. “We’re not only improving structures but also strengthening the foundation for long-term stability and opportunity for local families by investing in building rehabilitation.”

“Southern Door is profoundly grateful to NYS Senator Leah Webb for her unwavering support and practical leadership,” said Executive Director Hajra Aziz. “Senator Webb has been a steady champion for our district—showing up for working families, bringing critical state resources home, and pushing for solutions that strengthen public health, education, and local infrastructure. Her partnership on this effort helped make possible the Southern Tier’s first permanently affordable housing units, designed to serve Broome County’s most vulnerable residents with dignity and to advance the human right to housing. With the Senator’s support, we’re pressing ahead to have these units completed and occupied before the end of 2026. Now we need our local leaders, community stakeholders, and financial institutions to match the Senators resolve and help Southern Door close the remaining funding gap so we can cross the finish line on this one-of-a-kind project.”
