Senator Patrick M. Gallivan, (R-C, Elma) announces the Senate has passed a bill that would authorize the issuance of “Blue Star Mother” and “Blue Star Family” distinctive license plates in New York State. Senator Gallivan sponsored the legislation (S.7720) which also establishes a support fund for programs and organizations that support parents and family members of active-duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces.
The state currently offers “Gold Star” plates to honor families of active-duty military members killed in service to the country.
“The men and women who serve our nation sacrifice so much on our behalf, as do their families,” Senator Gallivan said. “Offering these special license plates is a way to support and recognize their service, and for family members to express the pride they feel for their loved one.”
Under the legislation, “Blue Star Family” license plates would be available upon request to any person residing in the state whose child, spouse, parent, sibling, or grandchild is actively serving in the armed forces.
The bill also establishes the Blue Star Mothers and Families Support Fund, with proceeds from the specialized plates to be used for programs and organizations that support parents and family members of active-duty military members.
The Senate passed the bill unanimously. The NYS Assembly must also pass the measure.
