Statement From Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt And Senator Mark Walczyk On Senate Democrats Blocking Common Sense Voter ID Legislation

Seal of the NYS Senate
Voting is one of the most sacred privileges we hold as Americans, and it's important that we work to ensure and uphold the integrity of our elections process.

According to Gallup polling, 84% of Americans support voter ID. Voters see this proposal for what it is “a common sense approach to ensure that our elections are secure and fair.” Despite widespread support for voter ID laws as a measure to ensure our elections are secure, Senate Democrats today blocked our legislation from moving through the Elections Committee and coming to the floor for a vote.

The security of our elections should not be taken lightly. A valid form of identification is required to buy cough medicine at the grocery store, so why wouldn’t we do the same to protect our right to vote? Every New Yorker deserves to have their vote counted, and they deserve the peace of mind of knowing our elections are secure. Senate Democrats continue to stand in the way in favor of rigging the system to preserve their own political futures.
