NYS Senator Kristen Gonzalez’s Statement on Governor Hochul’s Announcement Banning Local Law Enforcement’s Collaboration with ICE

I am encouraged by Governor Hochul’s announcement today that New York State will ban the use of 287(g) agreements by local law enforcement. With this, our state would prohibit local law enforcement from entering into agreements with the U.S  Department of Homeland Security, “under which state and local law enforcement officers may perform certain functions of federal immigration officials” or to be utilized as ICE agents.

This is a major step in the right direction and responds to the calls of thousands of New Yorkers with whom I have marched to demand that our state resist the anti-civilian and anti-immigrant attacks from ICE agents. Following recent executions in Minneapolis, our state must do everything within its power to protect New Yorkers and our immigrant communities.

As our budget process continues, I look forward to celebrating the full inclusion of the New York for All Act in our enacted budget and thank the Governor for this bold and vital start.
