STATEMENT: Senator Kristen Gonzalez, chair of the Elections Committee, on the SCOTUS mail-in voting decision
June 30, 2026
The Trump administration has made relentless efforts to undermine our elections by spreading baseless claims of voter fraud, intimidating election workers, and pushing to restrict ballot access. These actions challenge the integrity of our democracy by attacking the very principle of free and fair elections.
Today’s Supreme Court decision on Watson v. RNC reinforces the fundamental right to vote in the wake of these attacks. Mail-in voting is essential to keeping our elections accessible and allowing as many people as possible to participate in the democratic process.
As the Chair of the NY State Senate’s Elections Committee, I’m encouraged by the Court’s decision to uphold the constitutional authority of states to administer elections and will continue fighting to preserve the integrity of our elections.
New York has been a leader in voter rights and is committed to ensuring that our democracy belongs to the people.
