ALBANY, N.Y. – Today, Senator Patricia Fahy (D–Albany), Assemblymember Gabriella Romero (D—Albany, Guilderland, New Scotland), the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), elected officials, and 200-300 concerned citizens condemned the fatal ICE shooting of Renee Nicole Good that occurred in Minneapolis yesterday while calling on New York State to urgently pass legislation that will hold ICE accountable and put an end to their reign of terror.
These pieces of legislation include, but are not limited to, the following:
- MELT Act: Mandating End of Lawless Tactics (MELT) Act (S.8462 Fahy/A.8908 Simone) Bans the use of face coverings and plainclothes by ICE and other federal enforcement agents during civilian immigration actions conducted in New York State.
- RADAR Act: Immigration Enforcement RADAR (Reporting of Arrests, Detentions, Actions, and Removals) Act (S.XXXX Fahy/A.9376 Simone) Which would require New York State to create a public, online dashboard disclosing data on ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and immigration officials’ activity across the state.
- NY CIVIL RIGHTS Act: (S.8500 Myrie/A.9076 Romero) Establishes a right of action for the deprivation of constitutional rights; provides for compensatory damages, punitive damages, injunctive and declaratory relief, and reasonable attorney's fees.
- NY FOR ALL Act: (S.2235-A Gounardes/A.3506-A Reyes) Prohibits and regulates the discovery and disclosure of immigration status; prohibits police officers, peace officers, school resource officers, probation agencies, state entities, state employees, and municipal corporations from questioning individuals regarding their citizenship or immigration status; regulates the disclosure of information relating to immigration status.
“The paramilitary-style killing of Renee Nicole Good by terribly-trained, masked federal agents on a suburban street in broad daylight should outrage every American and New Yorker,” said Senator Patricia Fahy (D—Albany). “Before tragedy strikes in New York, we must take strong, legislative action to rein in ICE and its tactics, and protect our immigrant neighbors and communities. This includes passing my MELT Act, RADAR Act, the NY CIVIL RIGHTS Act, and the NY FOR ALL Act. I’m proud to stand with Assemblymember Romero and our community today to say: enough is enough. ICE’s reign of terror must end.”
“Yesterday we witnessed the execution of Nicole Renee Good - a wife, a mother, a poet, a U.S. citizen - whose life was tragically lost at the hands of violent, masked ICE agents operating under the Trump administration’s authoritarian agenda,” said Assemblymember Gabriella A. Romero (D, WFP–Albany, Guilderland, New Scotland). “Here in Albany, we have seen our neighbors kidnapped and families separated. This cannot continue, the time to act is right now. We must pass my bill, the NY Civil Rights Act, as well as the MELT, RADAR, and NY for All Acts that create strong protections and safety measures to shield New Yorkers against ICE’s dangerous encroachment on their rights. I proudly stand with Senator Fahy and hundreds of our community members today for this call to action, and I will continue to fight unapologetically for the rights of all New Yorkers.”
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the shooting by ICE in Minnesota yesterday,” said Albany Mayor Dr. Dorcey L. Applyrs. “As a result of federal agents being deployed into our cities communities, a young mother with three kids has lost her life. This was an entirely preventable tragedy that should not have occurred. My thoughts are with the victim’s family as they attempt to heal from this traumatic event. The unnecessary violence in our cities at the hands of ICE must stop. Our residents deserve to feel safe.”
