Senator Patrick M. Gallivan, (R-C, Elma) is co-sponsoring several bills in the New York Senate that would enhance benefits for volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers throughout the state. The legislation would update disability benefits for volunteers, allow workers to receive additional tax benefits, and establish a peer-to-peer mental health support program.
“Volunteer fire and ambulance personnel selflessly risk their lives to serve their communities, responding to fires, accidents, natural disasters and other emergencies without compensation,” said Senator Gallivan. “In return, the state must ensure disability benefits and other programs are in place to support them. These initiatives will also help local departments retain existing volunteers and recruit new ones.”
Legislation co-sponsored by Senator Gallivan includes:
S.5432 – Increases disability benefits for volunteer first responders injured while on duty. The Volunteer Benefits Law, which provides health care coverage, wage compensation, and other assistance, has not been updated in decades, and compensation rates no longer adequately reflect current economic realities.
S.5407A – Establishes the First Responder Peer Support Program Act to help volunteers exposed to distressing situations and ensure they have access to systems that prioritize their mental well-being and address the challenges they face.
S.6019 – Allows volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers to receive both a NY state tax credit and up to a 10% exemption on local property taxes, if authorized by their municipality. Current law does not allow volunteers to receive both.
The bills have been sent to various Senate committees for review.
