State Of The State 2014

“Governor Cuomo used this year’s State of the State message to reinforce the need for New York State to stay the course in terms of fiscal responsibility and restraint; I am excited to join with him to keep the Empire State on its new found path.

I am specifically encouraged that the Governor took the time to outline a series of proposals to address New York’s still stagnated economy, particular in Upstate and Western New York. Two items are chiefly responsible for New York’s reputation as hostile to business, high taxes and a byzantine regulatory structure than punishes business owners and entrepreneurs rather than encourage their growth.

I have worked diligently this past year as the leader of a bipartisan commission charged with helping to identify the state’s most burdensome regulations. After nine industry-specific public hearings staged across the state followed by intense review of hundreds of submissions from business owners and industry experts, my senate colleagues and I will be releasing our findings from this process next week. It is my hope that our report will serve as a guiding light for both the Legislature and the Governor in our joint effort to finally provide substantive regulatory relief for New York State job creators.

For sustained economic growth and job creation , regulatory reform must coincide with meaningful tax relief. I am pleased that the Governor is committed to delivering broad-based tax reduction for Upstate families, businesses, and specifically, the all-important manufacturing sector.

As always, New York State and its citizens face significant challenges, but I remain steadfast in the belief that our best days lie ahead and that they begin today.”
