Senator Montgomery discusses diversity in high schools, NYC's 124 struggling schools as designated by the State Education Department and the need to evaluate the NYC high school system as a whole.
Senator Velmanette Montgomery joined Senator John Liu, Chairperson of the Senate’s New York City Education Committee, Senator Kevin Parker and Senator Jessica Ramos to call for an open dialogue and consensus-building on school diversity and admissions to NYC Specialized High Schools.
Senator Montgomery notes:
We refuse to accept that there are only a small number of schools, including high schools, in the City of New York that meet what we want to see as academically excellent. There are a number of issues, it is not only what happens in eight schools and it is not only the diversity in terms of demographics. We want excellence across the board, we should be able to get academic excellence in the City of New York for all of our students.
