Over the past few years, Senate Democrats have pushed a litany of anti-police, pro-criminal legislation that has endangered our residents by taking needed tools away from our police men and women. That effort, unfortunately, continues today and that is why I joined my colleagues to show our opposition to a package of legislation that would weaken public protection.
The most egregious of these measures is S.6615, which was proposed by Attorney General Tisch James and is sponsored by Senator Kevin Parker. This legislation, entitled “The Police Accountability Act,” would have a chilling effect on our law enforcement community and strip them of their ability to protect tour families. This is an irresponsible measure that must be stopped.
Additionally, we raised our voices to oppose S.1415 (Rivera) and S.15A (Hoylman), which would both allow the State Parole Board to consider the early release of criminals, including those convicted of murder, and S.1553A (Myrie), relating to the expungement of certain convictions.
I invite everyone in our region to join us in the effort to defeat these bills so we can bring your voice to Albany to ensure that our men and women in blue can do their jobs and our families can be safe. That way we can tell those pushing these senseless proposals that our region stands united in opposition to their reckless proposals.
Senator Mario R. Mattera
