Protect your home and fight the tax lien sale

What is a tax lien sale?
If you have unpaid property taxes, water bills, or other city charges, your home may be at risk of being put in the tax lien sale list. A “tax lien sale” is when the city sells your debt to private investors, who can charge high interest or begin foreclosure proceedings.
On June 3rd, the City of New York will return to using this harmful practice for the first time since 2020. The Tax Lien Sale puts our community in the hands of Wall Street investors and predatory debt collectors.
What can I do to protect my home?
- Pay your bill if possible
- Get on a payment plan
- Apply for an exemption
- Apply for an “Easy Exit”
- Submit an Emergency Repair Certification

For support navigating the lien sale & for referrals to legal services providers, please call or email the Office of NYS Senator Jabari Brisport at (718)-643-6140 | teambrisport@nysenate.gov.
How can I get involved in the fight?
We're working to pass legislation that will abolish the Tax Lien Sale once and for all (Senate Bill S7186). You can learn more about the coalition at bit.ly/taxlien. You can also sign up here to get updates:
