Senator Helming addresses the closure of Willard Drug Treatment Center
The State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) has closed multiple correctional facilities across New York, including two in the 54th District -- Butler Correctional Facility (Wayne County) and Willard Drug Treatment Center (Seneca County).
I've shared my concerns about the impact of these closures and I have met with local leaders in Wayne and Seneca Counties to discuss potential ways to address the challenges their communities now face. In addition to concerns over lost jobs and economic impacts, there are also challenges that must be addressed, including infrastructure and related costs.
The state needs to understand the total ripple effects of these closures and be held accountable for implementing plans for the future of these facilities.
That is why I am seeking input from the community on how best to repurpose and redevelop these shuttered facilities. Specifically, we are looking for opportunities to help local communities with potential new businesses and job opportunities while streamlining the state's current burdensome process to redevelop sites like Butler and Willard.
