16 Legislative Resolution Number 498,
17 memorializing Governor George E. Pataki to
18 proclaim February 20 through 26, 2005, as
19 Eating Disorders Awareness Week in the State
20 of New York.
21 ACTING PRESIDENT FUSCHILLO:
22 Senator Bruno.
23 SENATOR BRUNO: Thank you, Mr.
24 President and colleagues.
25 The resolution that's before us

1 really is intended to help highlight and call
2 to our attention, and the people of New York,
3 that next week is Eating Disorders Awareness
4 Week. And a lot of people in this state and
5 in this country don't fully appreciate what
6 anorexia, bulimia, binge eating represents.
7 There probably isn't a person that
8 doesn't know someone personally that doesn't
9 suffer from an eating disorder of some type.
10 And the statistics are sad.
11 Probably one of the best known that died from
12 anorexia, bulimia, in her early 30s, Karen
13 Carpenter. Mary Kate Olsen, a beautiful young
14 lady, suffering from anorexia.
15 Movie stars are out there and they
16 personify, in the eyes of a lot of adolescents
17 and adults, beauty. Many of them suffer from
18 serious eating disorders. One out of 10
19 people that have an eating disorder are
20 treated for it.
21 Now, what people -- people hide it.
22 I know families that are embarrassed that
23 their daughters have anorexia or bulimia or
24 binge eat with bulimia. Do you know what?
25 People die, young people die from these eating

1 disorders.
2 Now, we had Jenny Lauren in the
3 chamber here, I believe last May. We passed a
4 bill with your help, and the Assembly, and the
5 Governor signed it, to create three centers,
6 pilot centers here in this state to treat,
7 primarily, anorexia and bulimia and binge
8 eating.
9 Jenny Lauren almost died. And she
10 wrote a book. And I just respect her and
11 others like her when you meet and talk with
12 them. She has put her life back together.
13 But in her book, which is very --
14 in a lot of places pretty difficult to read,
15 because what happens -- and by the way, I see
16 young people here in the chamber, and it's
17 great to see them here. Eighty percent --
18 think of this -- of 13-year-olds admit, when
19 they survey, that they diet.
20 Dieting is a great fad, and
21 necessary for some people to maintain good
22 health. But for young people, 90 percent of
23 the people that suffer in a serious way --
24 harm their bodies, a third never get cured --
25 are adolescents, young women primarily. Young

1 women.
2 So this may appear to some to be
3 casual. It is not casual. If you know anyone
4 who has a child or an adult in their family
5 with an eating -- a serious, serious eating
6 disorder, some of them are suicidal. And too
7 many people die.
8 I visited with a mother who travels
9 the country, from the western part of the
10 country. Her 19-year-old daughter died.
11 Couldn't -- couldn't help her, couldn't do
12 anything about it. Watched her die.
13 When you listen to people like
14 that, you realize that anything that we can do
15 to help people understand, help families
16 understand. There is more and more treatment.
17 And when we're successful with these pilots,
18 there will be comprehensive treatment;
19 prevention, care and aftercare.
20 And I would wager there isn't
21 anyone here that isn't exposed to someone with
22 an eating disorder. And a serious, serious
23 problem for families.
24 So thank you, Mr. President. Thank
25 you, our colleagues, for being aware, helping

1 your constituency be aware of this
2 life-threatening problem here in this state
3 and in the country.
4 Thank you.
5 ACTING PRESIDENT FUSCHILLO:
6 Thank you, Senator Bruno.
7 The question is on the resolution.
8 All those in favor signify by saying aye.
9 (Response of "Aye.")
10 ACTING PRESIDENT FUSCHILLO:
11 Opposed, nay.
12 (No response.)
13 ACTING PRESIDENT FUSCHILLO: The
14 resolution is approved.
15 Senator Bruno.
16 SENATOR BRUNO: Mr. President, I
17 would offer up this resolution to anyone that
18 would like to be on it.
19 And if anyone would rather not be
20 on it, would you just let the desk know at
21 your leisure.
22 Thank you.
23 ACTING PRESIDENT FUSCHILLO: The
24 resolution is open for cosponsorship. If you
25 do not wish to cosponsor the resolution,

14 Senator Bruno.
15 SENATOR BRUNO: Mr. President, is
16 there any further business at the desk?
17 ACTING PRESIDENT FUSCHILLO: No,
