22 I rise to acknowledge that this is a
23 chapter amendment to a bill originally introduced
24 by our former colleague Senator Thomas. As the
25 new chair of Consumer Protection, I am grateful
614
1 for the chance to build on the work that he did
2 when he was our colleague.
3 Consumer protection policy at the
4 state level is becoming even more important now
5 that the federal government is abdicating its
6 role to protect consumers by gutting the
7 Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and now,
8 today, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
9 As the president and his entourage
10 of oligarchs remove the guardrails on fraud and
11 scams and usury, it will be up to us to find ways
12 to protect the people of New York from the
13 potential harms that those could create.
14 So I look forward to doing this
15 work, and I vote aye.
