HEAP Applications Being Accepted

The NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) announced that beginning January 2, eligible low-income New Yorkers who are in danger of having their heat shut off or running out of fuel, can apply for emergency Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) benefits.

HEAP, overseen by OTDA, is a federally-funded program to help eligible households in meeting their home energy needs. Eligible households can receive one regular HEAP benefit per season, but may also be eligible for a one-time emergency HEAP benefit if they are in danger of running out of fuel or having their heat or heat-related utility service shut off.

Legal Assistance for Those Affected by Superstorm Sandy

In the wake of Superstorm Sandy,  the New York State Bar Association has been working with local bar associations throughout the affected area to coordinate relief efforts. From sitting down with seniors for coffee at Meadowview Apartments in Central Square, to talking with veterans at an annual ham dinner in Dexter, I’ve been spending a lot of time listening to the concerns of the older residents living in our region.

One of the biggest opportunities for chatting up seniors was at my Senior Health and Wellness Fairs, held recently in Central and Northern New York.  The events, which attracted more than 2,000 seniors, were held in Jefferson, Oswego and for the very first time ever, in St. Lawrence County.

Special guest Senator David Valesky, Chair of the Senate’s Aging Committee, was on hand at the event for a Q&A session on EPIC, the newly restored program which helps low-income seniors—including more than 10,000 in Senator Ritchie’s district—with the cost of their prescription drugs.

Brooklyn- State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) recently announced that eleven finalists have been selected to compete in Brooklyn’s 6th Annual Senior Idol to be held this Saturday, October 13, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. at Xaverian High School, 7100 Shore Road, Brooklyn.

 

Senator Marty Golden stated, “We are just days away from what is now a very popular Brooklyn tradition, Senior Idol. This year, we again have another list of performers who have great talent and will be sure to entertain the crowd. If you are looking for a night of laughter, tears, and true fun right in our neighborhood, don’t miss the show.”
