Senator Nozzolio Recognizes Senior Citizens of the Year

Albany-Senator Mike Nozzolio recently recognized Dorothy DeMay as Wayne County Senior Citizen of the Year and Angela Jones as Seneca County Senior Citizen of the Year. Senator Nozzolio joined local seniors at the State Capital to celebrate New York Senior Citizens Day.  Dorothy and Angela were recognized with other honorees from across New York State for their outstanding contributions to our community through their volunteer work.

Sen. Malcolm Smith Honors Senior of the Year - Ms. Gladys Joyner

(Albany, NY, May 7) - The State Senate joined Senator Malcolm A. Smith (D-Hollis) in passing a resolution honoring Ms. Gladys Joyner upon her selection as the New York State Office for the Aging's Queens County 2013 Senior of the Year.

"Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the community and their contributions, both past and future, are invaluable," Smith said. "I am proud to honor Ms. Gladys Joyner in recognition of her outstanding, and much appreciated, volunteer work."

Senator Bonacic (R/C/I-Mt. Hope) is pictured with honored guest Marion Dumond of Ellenville.  Ms. Dumond was honored for her outstanding contributions to her community through her volunteer work.  Born and raised in Sullivan County, Ms. Dumond has lived in Ellenvile for the past 48 years.  She is a career librarian who has devoted her time to serving as Chair of the Ellenville Library Museum Advisory Board, where she was intrumental in opening the current modern library facility, art gallery, and local art museum.

Senator Bonacic (R/C/I-Mt. Hope) is pictured with honored guest Glenice Foglia of Middletown.  Ms. Foglia was honored for her outstanding contributions to her community through her volunteer work.  Working as a secretary in the Nursing Department at Orange County Community College for 27 years, Ms. Foglia volunteers with the Jewish Family Services's Visitor Program, and is a very active member of the Middletown Lion's Club.

Hope) is pictured with honored guest Mabel Adams of Delhi.  Ms. Adams was honored for her outstanding contributions to her community through her volunteer work.  A resident of Delhi for almost 50 years, Ms. Adams volunteers for medical transportation services through the Office of the Aging, is a member of the Delaware County Senior Council, a member of the Delhi Senior Social Club, and is a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Delhi, among other community involvement.

Senate Passes Bill To Get Locally-Grown Produce To Senior Citizens

The New York State Senate today passed legislation (S2149) that would create a farm-to-senior program to promote the purchase of New York State farm products by senior centers and other institutions for the aging.The program would replicate a similar effort, the farm-to-school program, which was established in 2002 to enable schools to purchase locally-grown farm produce for school children.  The bill would give that same access to seniors.

Senate Passes Bill To Facilitate Care For The Elderly

Measure Cuts Costs and Red Tape For Those Caring for Out-of-State Relatives

The New York State Senate today gave final passage to a bill that would help make it easier and less expensive for legal guardians caring for the elderly or other relatives living out-of-state to carry out their responsibilities.

The measure (S2534) assists New Yorkers caring for adults in other states, as well as out-of-state individuals caring for elderly New Yorkers when they seek approval to fulfill health care, financial, and other legal responsibilities across state lines. It would create a registration form that would be used uniformly by participating states and replace a costly legal process that often required guardians to hire lawyers.

Senator Robach Makes Remarks at Lifespan Press Conference

Lifespan’s Elder Abuse Prevention Program (EAPP) protects New York’s most frail and vulnerable population by providing direct intervention services, public education, and training for professionals to assist victims.

 

 

 

Since 1998, Lifespan has intervened in thousands of elder abuse/mistreatment cases and trained more than 25,000 professionals from Buffalo to Brooklyn to recognize elder abuse and what steps to take when it is identified.

 

 

 

Some tragic facts concerning elder abuse:

 

 

 

· In NYS, more than 260,000 older adults are victims of elder abuse every year.

 

· Financial exploitation is the most prevalent form of abuse.
