Seward Digs Herkimer Diamond - Legislation Would Dub Crystal As Official State Mineral

ALBANY, 06/21/11 – The New York State Senate today passed legislation (S.1682) that would designate the Herkimer Diamond as the official state mineral.  The legislation, sponsored by Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta), celebrates the distinctive quartz crystals from the Mohawk Valley.

“Formed almost 500 million years ago and known worldwide, the Herkimer Diamond deserves to be properly recognized across New York,” said Senator Seward.  “I am extremely proud that the state senate has approved legislation naming the Herkimer Diamond as the official mineral of New York State.”

Gianaris Applauds Increase In Film Production

Queens Gazette wrote about Senator Gianaris' prase for the increase in film productions planned for New York this year.

A record number of new television series are being scheduled to film in New York state this year due to the state Film Production Credit championed by state Senator Michael Gianaris. Eight new television series will be filmed in the state in 2011, creating more than 4,700 industry related jobs.

The Governor’s Office for Motion Picture and Television Development announced that the film tax credit lured 70 new projects to New York since January. These projects are expected to spend a total of more than $1 billion.

Local Libraries Receive Vital State Funding

ONEONTA, 05/10/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today announced that community libraries throughout the 51st senatorial district have been awarded a total of nearly $1.1 million in public library construction grant funds.

"Our libraries are vital to our communities, especially in these tough economic times" Seward said. “Libraries are also some of the most historic landmarks we have and are in need of  repairs and upgrades to ensure their future viability and accessibility.”

Seward Preserves the Future of History Day

COOPERSTOWN, 04/29/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today announced that the state budget includes, at his insistence, $100,000 to continue the state’s participation in National History Day.  The announcement coincided with the statewide judging of student projects in Cooperstown.

"Students in our schools need to know more about history -- state, national and world,” said Senator Seward.  “State participation in National History Day promotes academic achievement, intellectual growth and offers the personal reward of knowing more about our past.  The program also shines a light on the New York State Historical Society, a true Otsego County gem.”

Senator Martins Attends Westbury Amateur Baseball Association Opening Day Ceremonies

Senator Jack M. Martins recently attended the opening day festivities for the Westbury Amateur Baseball Association. Senator Martins even had the opportunity to throw out the first ball along with Westbury Mayor Peter Cavallaro and Town Councilman Robert Troiano.

Senator Martins Visits Long Island Conservatory

Senator Jack M. Martins visited the Long Island Conservatory in Albertson where he met with President Min Sum Kim and Executive Director Patricia Schust.

The conservatory offers music programs as well as other programs such as an Intel science research program. The conservatory's mission is to "create a music-based-program of education and performance that will empower our community learners in an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust. Every student will be motivated and challenged to take part, learn, grow, and accomplish academic, social, and vocational goals."

While Senator Martins visited the conservatory, he met 19-year-old gifted pianist Vessilin Ninov, who began playing when he was 4 and has been a student at the conservatory.

Tartan Day 2011 Celebration

On Saturday, April 9th, Senator Robach had the opportunity to attend a celebration at the Main Street Armory in honor of Tartan Day. More than 500 people attend this year's event which featured live Scottish music throughout the day with eight bands performing. Senator Rivera presents Celia Cruz Winning Choir with Senate Resolution Honoring their Hard Work and Excellence

Bronx, NY – Senator Gustavo Rivera (D,WF-Bronx) presented the Celia Cruz High School Choir with a Senate Resolution honoring them for being named the Best Choir in New York City as part of the Sing! for Wildlife competition. This was the first Senate Resolution Senator Rivera introduced and passed through the State Senate.

Senator Rivera spoke to the students congratulated the students on being an example of the great accomplishments, both artistic and educational, that can come from a commitment to arts education.

Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) listened to the performance by the Fourth and Fifth Grade Chorus from Dorothy Nolan Elementary School, Saratoga Springs City School District, when they came to the Empire State Plaza Concourse in Albany as part of the New York State School Music Association’s "Music In Our Schools Month" on March 31st. The chorus performed under the direction of Deborah Craig and Mary Rocco.
