State Senate Passes New York Comprehensive Information System Act

Sen. DeFrancisco Bill, Co-Sponsored by Sen. Griffo, Would Improve Statewide Access to Information

State Senator John A. DeFrancisco, R-Syracuse, announced that his bill (S2314) passed the New York State Senate today.

Under this legislation, the New York State Library would be authorized to coordinate the purchase of electronic databases and other information resources for state agencies, library systems and other governmental entities.

Senator Serrano Celebrates Bronx Culture during Bronx Week 2014

(Bronx, NY)- Senator Serrano celebrated the culture and heritage of his home borough while attending Bronx Week events. Bronx Week is an annual week-long commemoration of everything the Bronx has to offer organized by Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz, Jr. and various local organizations. 

Serrano participated in the Arts and Culture reception at the Bronx County Court House. The reception was a showcase of the vivacious arts scene in the Bronx. The reception included the VIP opening of Daniel Hauben's "Bronx Works" exhibit. Hauben is a local Bronx artist.

Senate Passes Sea of Japan/East Sea Co-Naming Bill

Albany, NY— Senator Toby Ann Stavisky (D-Flushing) today announced that the State Senate passed S.6599-D, a bill that would require new textbooks purchased in New York State that reference the Sea of Japan to note that it is also called the East Sea. Passage of this initiative is the culmination of over two years of partnership with Korean community advocates and Queens legislator Senator Stavisky, who led the lobbying and education effort for the bill within the State Senate.

Concert benefits music program for refugee children

The Cathedral Academy at Pompei (CAP) Symphonic Music Program will hold a benefit concert on Friday, March 28 at St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral. Elinor Frey, who released her most recent CD "La voce del violoncello" in 2013, will perform at the event.

CAP's music program has given refugee children in Syracuse the chance to work with music professionals. Children choose from strings, brass, woodwinds or drumming, learning to compose and ultimately perform their piece at a concert.

DNA Info: Locals Demand Protections for 57th Street on Rizzoli Bookstore's Last Day

After the Landmarks Preservation Commission failed to designate the exterior or interior of the Rizzoli Bookstore, the store has finally been forced to close and make way for new development, resulting in the probable loss of another important cultural and historic resource on West 57th Street. DNA Info's Mathew Katz reported on a rally held by Community Board 5 outside the bookstore, which Sen. Krueger attended.
