The New Island Festival

Direct from Holland, the New Island Festival will set up stakes on New York City's Governors Island from September 10–13 and again from September 17–20. The festival will kick off the fall with provocative theatre, stunning site-specific performance, dazzling visual arts and exhilarating DJ sets, performed by world class Dutch performers. More than 150 artists will perform during the festival.

Creative Time PLOT 09 Public Art Installation

Creative Time is putting on a new public artquadrennial: PLOT, taking place on historic Governors Island and featuringinternational artists responding to the island with new, site-responsive artworks. Thefirst edition of PLOT, This World & Nearer Ones, is curated by Mark Beasley. Theproject is produced in association with Governors Island Preservation and EducationCorporation, the National Park Service, NYC & Company, and the Office of theMayor.

Learn about - and fly your own - kites

The first 100 children who come to a reading of Touching the Sky on September 13 will receive a free pocket-sized Mighty Kite of their very own. Touching the Sky is a charming work of historical narrative, telling the story of Wilbur Wright's first flight over water, launched from Governors Island, and Orville's groundbreaking flights on an early tour of Europe.

Serrano at Island Kids Celebration

Senator Serrano was on Roosevelt Island for the culmination of the Island Kids Summer Camp. The camp is for children ages 5 to 13, and its programming includes swimming, sports, arts and crafts, music, culinary arts, and weekly field trips. This program offers partial and full scholarships to low-income families, who might otherwise not be able to participate. The 2009 season kicked off on July 7th, and there was an upbeat closing ceremony on August 26th.

Senator Serrano celebrated with Lincoln Center and the The Big Three Palladium Orchestra at the 52 People for Progress at 52 Park concert in the Bronx. Senator Serrano as well as New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, spoke about the importance of accessible arts programming in the South Bronx.

Serrano Congratulates Chita Rivera for Receiving Highest Honor

Senator José M. Serrano (D- Manhattan/Bronx) today congratulated Puerto Rican-American Broadway icon Chita Rivera, who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama in the White House yesterday. The Medal of Freedom is the highest medal that can be awarded to a civilian in the United States.   “As someone with a deep appreciation for the arts, I am overjoyed that this honor has been bestowed upon someone as deserving as Chita Rivera,” said Senator Serrano.
