Celebration Of Greek Independence Day

On Friday March 22nd Senator Mike Gianaris, Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas and Queens Borough President Helen Marshall hosted a celebration of Greek Independence Day at the Hellenic Cultural Center in Astoria. Greek Independence Parade 2013

After marching in the 2013 Greek Independence Parade, Senator Gianaris issued the following statement.

Senator Flanagan Welcomes NYSSMA Students to Albany

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) recently welcomed student musicians from Long Island who received the honor of being selected to one of the New York State School Music Association's (NYSSMA) All-State jazz performing groups.  The students were in the State Capital in Albany to perform in early March to kick off the National and State "Music in Our Schools Month" celebration.

SENATOR GALLIVAN SAYS UPSTATE FILM TAX CREDIT WILL BE INCLUDED IN FINAL ENACTED STATE BUDGET

Measure Seen As Potential Boost To Upstate Economy

New York State Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C-I, Elma) announced today that after weeks of negotiating, the final enacted state budget will include a provision to boost the film production industry in upstate New York.

Currently, New York State provides a tax incentive for up to 30 percent of certain production costs, but Gallivan has long argued that upstate and its unique cities need something more to attract significant studio interest.

            David Lloyd, a renowned tenor and past director of the Lake George Opera, was honored by the State Legislature this past week.  The Senate and Assembly adopted resolutions recognizing Lloyd’s opera career and lifetime contributions to the arts.

Senator Gianaris and PS 78 Student Council Work to Restore and Re-Beautify Shady Park after Hurricane Sandy

(Long Island City, NY) Senator Michael Gianaris vowed to continue working with the PS 78 Student Council students to repair, restore, and re-beautify Shady Park, also known as Andrews Grove, after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. In a letter to the Student Council, Senator Gianaris thanked the students for their ongoing participation in the restoration efforts regarding the park and assured students that repairing the park is a top priority.

“Shady Park is a gem in our community and beloved by neighborhood children, who were given a voice by the PS 78 Student Council. We cannot let Hurricane Sandy rob our neighborhood of this beautiful park in an area in need of more outdoor places for children and adults alike to enjoy,” said Senator Gianaris.

Senate Approves Mixed Martial Arts Legislation

 The New York State Senate today passed legislation to legalize and regulate mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions in New York State. The bill (S.2755), sponsored by Senator Joseph Griffo (R-C-I, Rome), would allow single discipline martial arts organizations to hold professional competitions in New York State and gives the state Athletic Commission the jurisdiction to regulate professional mixed martial arts promotions, participants, bouts and exhibitions.

Department of Financial Services to Speek Resolution of Insurance Claims in Areas Affected by SANDY

The NYS Department of Financial Services (DFS) is setting new rules to speed the processing of insurance claims in areas affected by Storm Sandy. The new regulation reduces the amount of time an insurer can delay its decision on a claim, and requires insurers to report to the Department on how many claims it is delaying and the reasons for the delays.

Senator Klein Hosts Annual Black History Month Breakfast

BRONX, NY - State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) joined former New York City Comptroller, Bill Thompson, local elected officials, African-American Community leaders and nearly 300 constituents in celebrating Black History Month at his annual breakfast at Villa Barone Manor today. At the breakfast, the program included a keynote address from former New York City Comptroller, Bill Thompson, musical performances from the Reverend Nathaniel Tyler Lloyd Legacy Choir of Trinity Baptist Church and the presentation of awards to African-American community leaders for their work in the district and beyond.

ALBANY, NY, Senator Jeff Klein (D-Westchester/Bronx) and Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj (D-80) joined together yesterday in passing a Joint resolution in both the Senate and the Assembly commemorating the Fifth Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of Kosova on February 17, 2013. Following American and NATO-led military intervention in Kosovo to end ethnic cleansing under Slobodan Milosevic, Kosova is now functioning under a democratic Constitution and has established diplomatic relations with the United States.
