Close to 200 people, including senior citizens and families, participated in Senator Felder’s free flu shot event today at the Senator’s office in Midwood. Constituents from across Senator Felder’s district received the 3-in-1 flu shot administered by nurses from Beth Israel Medical Center.

Senator O'Brien recognizes "Domestic Violence Awareness Month"

 

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Today, Senator Ted O’Brien joined Alternatives for Battered Women, the Rochester and Monroe County Domestic Violence Consortium and other local elected officials in recognizing October as “Domestic Violence Awareness Month.”

“Domestic and dating violence is a scourge that must be confronted and eliminated,” Senator O’Brien said. “Throughout their lifetimes, domestic and dating violence will affect 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men, and many incidents continue to go unreported. We must continue to insist that such violence will not be tolerated in our community.”

Peralta demands a safer Roosevelt Ave.

As reported by Queens Chronicle:

After the recent stabbing of Ever Orozco and years of prostitution, violence and other crimes, state Sen. Jose Peralta (D-East Elmhurst) is demanding changes be made to end the violence on Roosevelt Avenue.

Orozco, who was allegedly stabbed by a 22-year-old man who thought the 69-year-old blew kisses and made sexual gestures at him as the two crossed paths at 90th Street in Jackson Heights. The police are calling the case a hate crime.

“The recent incidents of deadly violence on Roosevelt Avenue in broad daylight, underscore the fact that we need a lot more than trash bins and video cameras to make Roosevelt Avenue safe,” the senator wrote in a statement.

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month by celebrating the rich histories, cultures and contributions of our nation's Hispanic American citizens. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15th and ending on October 15th.

SENATOR MARTINS JOINS WILLISTON PARK COMMUNITY IN REMEMBERING BUD HALLER

Senator Jack M. Martins joined with the Williston Park community in celebrating the life of Nicholas "Bud Haller" at a dedication ceremony at the Williston Park Gazebo.

Bud Haller served the community is so many different ways. He was a trustee and deputy mayor for the Village of Williston Park. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Corpus Christi Council, past president of the Williston Park Rotary and past vice president of The Chamber of Commerce of the Willistons, a longtime member American Legion Williston Post 144 and a trustee of the Williston Park Library.

This wonderful community member, husband and father will never be forgotten. Thoughts and prayers are with his family and many friends.

Senator O’Brien recognizes Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month with local advocacy groups

PENFIELD, N.Y. – Today, Senator Ted O’Brien stood with women’s and health care advocates, including the non-profits Made the Same Inc., the Western New York Ovarian Cancer Project and Gilda’s Club of Rochester, to discuss the serious health risk posed to women by ovarian cancer during its National Awareness Month.

Ovarian cancer is highly treatable if caught early, but current screening methods are unreliable and early symptoms are so minor that they are often dismissed by doctors. The disease will affect roughly 1 in 70 women in their lifetimes.

The National Do Not Call Registry is a service managed by the nation’s consumer protection agency, the Federal Trade Commission.  The agency offers the opportunity to limit the number of telemarketing calls which you receive free of charge.  Registration is free.

Community Events Information

New York Blood Center (NYBC) is urgently calling on Long Islanders to roll up their sleeves to help fill the void.  According to the NYBC, the cancellations and corresponding loss of donations has led to a low supply of blood – especially O-Negative.

NYBC has events scheduled daily where people can donate and are always welcoming donors to visit one of their walk-in centers.
