A Celebration of Gratitude: Honoring North Street Community Partners for the Gift of 317 North Street

Senator Stewart-Cousins joined Cardinal Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, on Wednesday, June 4th at "A Celebration of Gratitude", a ceremony to honor North Street Community Partners for donating the 317 North Street building and property, making it the permanent home for the John A. Coleman School and Children's Rehabilitation Center. The school and rehab center provide educational and therapeutic services to over 5,000 of New York's children dealing with complex medical conditions. Senate Passes Senator Parker’s Bill to Aid Prisoners Upon their Release

(Brooklyn, NY) – Last week, the State Senate passed Senate Bill S.1353, by Senator Kevin Parker.  The bill requires that prisoners be informed of healthcare, mental healthcare and other services upon their release from state prison. In an attempt to make their reintegration into society as seamless as possible, and to safeguard our community’s public health and welfare, the former prisoners will be alerted to special programs in their communities, such as tuberculosis services, HIV/AIDS services, education, alcohol or substance abuse treatment, and other general mental health services.

SQUADRON, SILVER, NADLER, CHIN ANNOUNCE ENERGY IMPROVEMENTS AT GATEWAY PLAZA

Electeds, Community Continue Push for Added Energy Efficiency at Gateway

NEW YORK—Today, after advocacy efforts by Senator Daniel Squadron, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, Congressmember Jerrold Nadler, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, Councilmember Margaret Chin, and the Gateway Plaza Tenants Association (GPTA),  Gateway Residential Management LLC announced plans to replace the remaining 3,100 individual packaged terminal air conditioners which provide cooling and heating to apartments at Gateway Plaza.  Gateway Residential Management has also pledged to upgrade the 1,700 electrical sub meters, used to measure tenant electricity use, which have not been replaced since the construction of the 33-year-old building. Gateway Plaza residents were forced to endure freezing conditions and sky-high electric bills this past winter.

RITCHIE GIVES BEAUTIFIERS A BOOST

State Senator Patty Ritchie brought doughnuts and coffee to the 30 volunteers painting a house on New York Avenue in Ogdensburg recently.  The group was lending their time as part of the city’s pride and beautification program.

GOING GOLD: RITCHIE CONGRATULATES OLYMPIANS AT CAPITOL

State Senator Patty Ritchie congratulated two medal-winning Olympians this week at the State Capitol for their athleticism during the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi.

Visiting the Capitol were Erin Hamlin of Remsen, a three-time Olympian and the first female American luger to medal at any Winter Olympics and Josephine Pucci of Pearl River, a member of the Silver Medal-winning U.S. Women’s Hockey Team.

Senator Parker Honors Honduran-born Purple Heart Recipient

(Brooklyn, NY) – On May 20, the eve of Memorial Day, Senator Kevin Parker and his State Senate colleagues honored veterans from their respective districts during the Senate’s annual Veterans Hall of Fame Awards ceremony. Senator Parker’s honoree was Paul Morales, a native of Honduras that immigrated to the United States in 1965. Specialist E-4 Morales was selected by the Senator for his distinguished service in the United States Army, which awarded Mr. Morales with the Purple Heart Medal.

(Brooklyn, NY) – Yesterday, Senator Kevin Parker joined Assemblyman Marcos A. Crespo and veterans groups advocate to announce their bill, A6820/S5390, which clarifies that amputee veterans who have lost a limb due to their military service, and who have private insurance to supplement their Veterans Administration benefits, cannot be denied replacement of their outdated artificial limbs when new and more advanced prosthetic technology is available.

Moffat Library Legislation Sponsored by Senator Bill Larkin Passes Senate

Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) announced today that legislation (Senate bill S.7066) to allow the Moffat Library in Washingtonville to be eligible for Dormitory Authority financing has passed the Senate. 

Moffat Library is planning a multi-million dollar renovation of its historic building and this legislation will allow the library to apply to the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York to assist with the financing of the project.

RITCHIE HONORS OSWEGO COUNTY'S JANE BACKUS AT CAPITOL CEREMONY

State Senator Patty Ritchie honored Oswego County’s Jane Backus as her 2014 Woman of Distinction from the 48th Senate District recently at a special ceremony at the State Capitol.

A retired English teacher after 25 years, Mrs. Backus taught seniors and sophomores at both Ogdensburg Free Academy and Mexico Academy and Central Schools.  Today, she is an extremely active member of her community, volunteering her time with many organizations that aim to better the Central New York region.

Electeds: Momentum Builds to Recognize Importance of Lunar New Year Holiday

 

NEW YORK – Today, State Senator Daniel Squadron, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, elected officials from around the city, and community leaders celebrated the passage of a bill to push the Lunar New Year as a school holiday. The bill (S.6688 Golden/Squadron / A.7756 Kim/Silver) passed the State Senate earlier this week and the Assembly in February and will now go to Governor Cuomo's desk.
