Senator Ortt Hosts Forum on Heroin and Opioid Addiction

Niagara County Forum is the Third Out of Four to be Held This Spring

State Senator Rob Ortt (R-C-I, North Tonawanda), co-chair of the Senate’s Joint Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction, today led the discussion on the growing threat of heroin and opioid abuse in our communities. The public forum, held at Niagara University, drew more than 100 concerned residents throughout the area.   

Speakers on the panel included local law enforcement, educators, addiction specialists, health care professionals, elected officials and parents of children affected by heroin and opioid addiction.

SENATOR MARTINS & NASSAU POLICE TO HOLD PROGRAM TO HELP PARENTS SPOT THE SIGNS OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE

     Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District) and the Nassau County Police Department will be sponsoring a free program to help parents protect their children from substance abuse. The substance abuse prevention program will be held on Thursday, May 28th at 7 pm at the Hicksville Public Library (169 Jerusalem Avenue, Hicksville).

Submit testimony to the Heroin Task Force

In recent years, heroin and prescription opioid abuse has plagued the nation. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), in 2011, 4.2 million Americans reported using heroin at least once. Further, a 2012 survey by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services ( HHS) Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) found that 467 thousand Americans were addicted to the drug – approximately double the number of people from just 10 years earlier.

Senator Comrie Announces Bill Protecting Minors from Harmful Advertisements

Legislature Called on to Prohibit Alcohol and Sexually Suggestive Ads on State-Maintained Property

(Hollis, Queens) Senator Leroy G. Comrie (D-Hollis) was proud to announce the introduction of Senate Bill S.4455-2015, new legislation that will moderate advertising alcoholic beverages and provocative content to minors on state-owned property. This legislation was announced this afternoon at a press conference attended by Assembly Member Bill Scarborough, Council Member Ruben Wills and leaders from the South Queens community.

Senator Carlucci Pushes for Access to Opioid Antidote Over-the-Counter - Sends Letter to Health Commissioner Zucker Requesting Standing Order

Senator David Carlucci (D – Rockland/Westchester) has sent a letter to New York State Health Commissioner Howard Zucker, requesting he issue a Standing Order for the drug Naloxone.

Naloxone (also known as Narcan) is an “opioid antagonist” medication, used to counter the effects of opioid overdose. This life saving medication is used in opioid overdoses to counteract life-threatening depression of the central nervous system and respiratory system.

SENATOR MARTINS, MANHASSET CASA, AND NASSAU POLICE HELP RESIDENTS “SHED THE MEDS”

Approximately 500 Pounds of Medications Collected For Safe Disposal

     Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District) recently partnered with the Manhasset Community Coalition Against Substance Abuse (CASA) and the Nassau County Police Department to hold a Shed the Meds program where residents could safely dispose of their old, unwanted medications.  The program was held at Shelter Rock School in Manhasset.

     Approximately 500 pounds of medications were collected for safe disposal by the Nassau County Police Department.

Murphy: Act quickly to get NARCAN to school nurses

VALHALLA, NY - Experts say tools are needed to win the war on opioid addiction. Healthcare professionals joined Senator Terrence P. Murphy today at the Valhalla Ambulance Corps to call for quick implementation of an important budget item secured by Murphy which supplies school nurses with one such tool, Naloxone, or NARCAN, and trains them in administering the heroin antidote. Senator Murphy called for the State Department of Health to expedite creation of the rules and regulations necessary to implement this historic program.
