Relive Elmont Pitcher Danny Aguilo's Amazing Performance

Elmont Memorial High School sophomore Danny Augilo's had a game pitchers dream of. Against Hempstead, Aguilo threw a no-hitter while recording every out by strikeout for 21 total in the game. Senator Jack M. Martins was proud to recognize this amazing achievement. 

Senator Martins recognized another Elmont Memorial High School Spartan in pitcher Enrique Sanchez, who also pitched a no-hitter.

The Elmont Memorial High School baseball team is not short on pitching - that's for sure!

Senator Martins Congratulates Intel Semifinalists From North Shore Hebrew Academy

Senator Jack M. Martins visited the North Shore Hebrew Academy in Great Neck to congratulate Jonathan Michael Nachman and Sarah Jamie Toledano for being named semi-finalists in the Intel Science Talent Search.

Jonathan’s project, “Green Micropatterning: Stamping Candida antarctica Lipase-B onto Poly(e-caprolactone),” focused on a green way to make a circuit board, using less dangerous chemicals.

Sarah’s project, “Strychnine Distinguishes between Two Populations of a1 Glyince Receptors in HEK Cells,” focused on distinguishing drugs based on their properties.

In Queens Neighborhood, Schools Are Bursting

The 10 portable classrooms outside Public School 19 in Corona, Queens, were supposed to be temporary. 

Sixteen years later, they are still there, holding nearly double the elementary schoolchildren they were meant to and struggling with age. The heating system malfunctions in the winter, forcing students to sit through lessons wearing coats, scarves and hats. 

In the main building at P.S. 19, there are monitors to keep order in the lines that form outside the bathrooms, and students’ trips are timed. The wait can be too long for some of the younger students.

Henry Viscardi School Thanks Senator Martins

Senator Jack M. Martins visited the Henry Viscardi School in Albertson and, after taking a tour of the school, was surprised at a welcome assembly during which the students presented Senator Martins with a thank you card with their names and messages on it. One message stated, “Thank you for all your help. My future means a lot to me.”

During the state budget negotiations, there was a proposal that was part of the Governor’s Executive Budget to shift costs for 4201 schools, which include the Henry Viscardi School, onto local school districts, thereby practically eliminating funding for those schools. However, Senator Martins was able to work with his colleagues to restore the funding to 4201 schools.

Local Libraries Receive Vital State Funding

ONEONTA, 05/10/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today announced that community libraries throughout the 51st senatorial district have been awarded a total of nearly $1.1 million in public library construction grant funds.

Senator Martins Meets With Members of the Port Washington Education Foundation

Senator Jack M. Martins visited the Port Washington Education Foundation Educational Support Center at the Port Washington Public Library on Tuesday, April 26. He spoke with the third grade students gathered there for the weekly after-school program.

Senator Martins stated that the one of the best jobs of his job as a Senator was visiting with students. The children sang a song for the Senator about Port Washington, accompanied on the guitar by Doreen Gamel, who also wrote the lyrics.

Senator Martins explained why it is important to recognize those who work to make the community a better place and then proudly recognized PWEF Educational Support Center founder Ellen Bernstein Fox with a Senate Proclamation.

Senator Martins Passes Resolution Congratulating Elmont Pitching Stars

Senator Jack M. Martins passed a resolution on the floor of the Senate recognizing Elmont pitching stars Danny Aguilo and Enrique Sanchez. Aguilo made pitching history when he pitched a no-hitter, striking out 21 batters. Sanchez also threw a no-hitter for the Elmont Memorial High School Spartans. Senator Martins also recognized team captain Tommy Caraballo and wished him a happy birthday while on the floor of the Senate. Senator Martins remarked that these young men are a credit to their school and the entire Elmont community.
