NYSPHSAA Announces Scholar/Athlete Team Awards

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association announced the Fall 2010 Scholar/Athlete team award for each fall sport around the state. Congratulations to the following schools in Senator Robach's district for finishing in the top 10 of their respective sport:

Greece Athena High School - 98.266 (Boys Cross Country)

Greece Arcadia High School - 96.718 (Girls Soccer)

Greece Athena High School - 97.378 (Birls Volleyball)

Peralta calls for new school for immigrants

A few days after former Hearst Magazines Chairwoman Cathie Black received her waiver to become city schools chancellor, state Sen. Jose Peralta (D-East Elmhurst) already had a potential assignment.

Peralta said in a letter to Black dated Dec. 3 that he wanted her to consider establishing an immigrant school near Newtown High School at 48-01 90th St. in Elmhurst. The school’s future has been in question, and Peralta said creating this new school could help with the overcrowding at Newtown.

Student Anthology Publication Party

On Friday, December 10th, Senator Robach attended, and spoke at, Thomas Jefferson High School's "Student Anthology Publication Party". This was presented by Writers & Books and the Academy of Performing and Visual Arts at TJHS. Forty students attended the event which also included six performers.

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer Hosts Middle School Geography Bee

On November 30, 2010, Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) hosted a geography bee for local middle school students at the Port Chester Middle School. Five area middle schools – Anne M. Dorner Middle School in Ossining, Blind Brook Middle School in Rye Brook, the Eastview and Highlands Campuses of the White Plains School District, and the Port Chester Middle School – sent teams of students to the competition.

Eddie Romero, an eighth grade student at the Port Chester Middle School won the geography bee, while Ryann Gutierrez, another Port Chester eighth grader, was a close runner-up. All of the students were bright and worthy competitors.

(Hillcrest, NY)- Senate President Malcolm A. Smith was joined by the new NYC Chancellor Cathie Black, Assemblyman Rory Lancman (D-Hillcrest) and Councilman James F. Gennaro (D-Fresh Meadows) for a tour of Hillcrest High School today. They toured several classrooms and met with students and teachers.

Keynote Address at Greyston Workforce Development Graduation Ceremony

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins delivered the keynote address at the Greyston Foundation’s Workforce Development Program (WD 2.0) Graduation ceremony, held in the Yonkers Public Library Riverfront Branch. Immediately preceding the ceremony, employers from throughout Westchester County met with graduates to assess employment possibilities.

NYS Senator Eric Adams states: “New York State law requires that school superintendents have a minimum of three years teaching experience and do graduate work in ‘school administration.’ The mayor’s nominee, Cathleen Black, satisfies neither prerequisite.

NYS Senator Eric Adams and NYS Assemblyman Marcos Crespo Will Introduce Legislation to Amend State Law Concerning Waivers for NYC Public School Chancellor

On Sunday, November 21, 2010, NYS Senator Eric Adams and NYS Assemblyman Marcos Crespo will amend State law to require concurrent resolution by the Senate and Assembly for any Commissioner’s waiver of requirements for persons who do not meet educational or professional prerequisites

 NYS Senator Eric Adams states: “My legislation (S8512) will amend the Education law to restrict the ability of the Commissioner of Education to issue a certificate for Superintendent or Chancellor to persons who do not meet educational or professional requirements for the position.
