Protecting New York's Water And Holding Gas Corporations Accountable: Senate Bill Mandates Moratorium To Allow For Comprehensive Study Of Drilling In Marcellus Shale

Continuing to put public safety over special interests, the Senate Democratic Majority passed a moratorium on gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale to prevent the potentially hazardous contamination of the state’s water supply. Through the moratorium, gas and oil companies would be restricted from hastily endangering the health and economic well-being of more than 12 million local residents who draw their water from the affected area by engaging a process known as hydraulic fracturing or hydro-fracking.

Senator Valesky Hosts Energy Saving Workshop

SYRACUSE, N.Y.— State Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) is sponsoring a special seminar to help homeowners and renters save money on energy costs.

“Energy costs are a big concern in Upstate New York,” said Senator Valesky. This event will provide people with information about how to reduce their bills when they need it.”

Representatives from local utility companies will present cost saving tips on reducing energy, heat, and hot water bills. Also, representatives will detail the specific charges listed on utility bills, and show participants where they might be able to decrease their usage. For example, replacing five lights with Energy Star lightbulbs will save $9 per month.

Environmentalists, Industry, Labor Join Senator Bill Perkins For A Healthy New York

Community leaders, public health and small business advocates, industry and labor joined Senator Bill Perkins to praise legislation signed by Governor Paterson that will dramatically reduce the deadly pollution that comes from burning home heating oil. Senator Perkins’ legislation, S1145C sharply reduces the amount of sulfur allowed in home heating oil from over 2,000 parts per million to just 15 parts per million (ppm).  Sulfur contributes to air pollution that adversely affects the health of millions of New Yorkers.
