Grisanti Asks Judge For Maximum Penalties Against Tonawanda Coke

New York State Senator Mark Grisanti (R,I-Buffalo) today submitted a letter to the Chief District Judge of the United States District Court asking for the maximum fine that is allowed by law to be handed to Tonawanda Coke Corporation for the illegal actions and willful violation of environmental law that resulted in health-related problems and illnesses for some residents who live near the Tonawanda Coke facility. As chairman of the New York State Senate's Environmental Conservation Commission, Sen. Update on Middleport remediation

BUFFALO NEWS: New York State, Canada Announce Peace Bridge Agreement

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and Canadian officials this morning announced an agreement concerning improvements at the Peace Bridge.

“We prefer partnership,’’ said Gary Doer, the Canadian ambassador to the United States, of the end to the months-long dispute that seriously tested relations between New York and Canada.

“Some would say we’ve been trying to do this for 20 years,’’ Cuomo said. He said the deal is between Canada and New York and ensures that delays on the Peace Bridge Authority will no longer get in the way. “There’s nothing conceptual here ... This is a very specific plan with projects that we’re committed to.’’

Senator Gianaris Touts Environmental Initiatives on Earth Day

(Queens, NY) Senator Michael Gianaris announced the passage of a bill which would establish incentives for investments in solar energy and applauded Mayor Michael Bloomberg for announcing the largest expansion of New York City’s Recycling Program in 25 years. Senator Gianaris noted that environmental activists had reason to cheer this week as the country celebrated Earth Day on Monday April 22nd and New York, on both the city and state levels, took real steps forward in going green.

Summary of 2013 Senate Legislative Action

 

2013-2014 NEW YORK STATE BUDGET

 

The New York State Senate approved the 2013-14 state budget that delivers on priorities outlined by the Senate Republican Conference to provide much-needed tax relief for middle-class families, help businesses create jobs, and, for the third consecutive year, the budget keeps spending growth below two percent, which is consistent with the local spending cap that applies to school districts and local governments.  It was also the third consecutive budget approved prior to the April 1 deadline.

Bill to ban feral swine passes Senate

The State Senate today passed legislation sponsored by Senator Betty Little that would prohibit the importation and possession of Eurasian boar, otherwise known as feral swine. 

Companion legislation is expected to be considered in the Assembly later this week.  The legislation was introduced at the request of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

“When we talk about invasive species, feral swine isn’t what comes to the minds of most people first, but these are very destructive animals that can cause a lot of problems and be very difficult to control,” said Senator Betty Little.

On June 11th in Albany, State Senator Hugh T.
