The measure was assigned to committee immediately after Senator Tkaczyk introduced it in May of 2013. The Chair of the Committee has to date refused to place it on the agenda, but Senator Tkaczyk is using a procedural maneuver called a “Motion to Consider” to force a vote on the bill.

Senator Griffo's Weekly Column #17: Celebrating Earth Day, Protecting Our Environment

Earth Day and Arbor Day are wonderful reminders of our ongoing obligation to protect our natural resources, which provide us shelter, food, fuel and beauty.

I was pleased to support this year’s state budget because it recognizes the importance of protecting our clean air and clean water and expanding our access to park lands and other open spaces. Our spending plan also includes needed investments in agriculture, which will allow our farmers to better use their land and to have an easier time bringing their harvest to homes.

Earth Day / Arbor Day 2014: New State Budget Investments Will Promote Clean Air, Clean Water, and Healthy Communities

Since the very first Earth Day back in 1970, we have marked April 22nd as a day to celebrate the importance of our natural environment, and to rededicate ourselves to ensuring clean air and water, open spaces, and green, healthy communities.

Similarly, Arbor Day, which falls on Friday April 25th, was established in 1872 as a way to encourage farmers and homesteaders to plant trees that would provide shade, shelter, food, fuel and beauty to the nation's open spaces. In 1907, former New York Governor and U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt issued an "An Arbor Day Proclamation to the School Children of the United States" highlighting the importance of forestry and trees to our nation's well-being.
