Volunteers plant 100 trees in LIC

The Queens Chronicle wrote about volunteers coming together to plant 100 trees at Queensbridge Park as part of the 5th annual "One Thing That's Green" event.

On Saturday morning (Earth Day) nearly 500 volunteers gathered at Queensbridge Park in Long Island City to plant 100 trees. Volunteers were of all ages dressed in jeans or workout clothes. There were piles of shovels, gardening gloves and wheelbarrows set up at each of the color-coded stations.

JetBlue Airways teamed with New York Restoration Project, the nonprofit that has partnered with the city to plant a million trees throughout the city by 2017, to put on the fifth annual One Thing That’s Green event.

Senate Passes Sex Abuse Prevention Bills

Measures Increase Penalties, Enhance Community Notification and Protection

 

The New York State Senate today passed a package of eight bills to prevent sexual predators from obtaining access to potential victims and help law enforcement and communities keep track of their whereabouts. The bills will help increase the amount of information available about convicted sex offenders and seeks to prevent them from obtaining access to vulnerable individuals.

Gallivan Calls On OCFS To Investigate Death of Abdifatah Mohamud

Senator Calls Pattern of Abuse “Troubling”

Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R,C,I – 59th District), Chairman of the New York State Senate Social Services Committee, called on the commissioner of the New York State Office of Child and Family Services, Gladys Carrion, to use the full authority of her office to conduct an investigation into the events surrounding 10-year-old Abdifatah Mohamud’s beating death at the hands of his stepfather earlier this month in their family home in Buffalo.

“There is a pattern of abuse and dysfunction that this young boy was subjected to that can be traced back to at least 2009, including numerous incidents where local police were called to the home to investigate claims of domestic abuse,” Gallivan said.

This event was a day long event which allowed for survivors of all forms of child abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault to come together, heal together, share their stories through any and all means of creativity, and break the silence that surrounds these crimes.

LIC High says no to closure

The Times Ledger reports on the rally held outside Long Island City High School, where students, parents, teachers, and elected officials gathered to protest the proposed closure and "turnaround" of the school.

More than a hundred students, teachers and supporters stood out on the steps of Long Island City High School Monday afternoon to protest the proposed closure of the institution.

 

“This is not something that we want and we’re not going to let it happen without a fight,” said state Sen. Michael Gianaris (D-Astoria), an alumnus of the school.

Sex Attack Suspect Sought

The Queens Gazette investigates the recent attack on a 30-year old woman in Sunnyside by a man who is suspected to be involved in similar attacks in Jackson Heights.

Queens detectives are trying to determine if a man who stalked and groped a 30-year-old Sunnyside woman early Sunday morning, is the same suspect sought in connection with a series of recent attacks in Jackson Heights.

 

The victim in the Easter Sunday attack told investigators the man followed her when she exited a nearby No. 7 train at about 5:45 a.m. on April 8.
