Senator Griffo's Weekly Column #7: Protecting Tax Dollars In Welfare Programs

I believe one of government’s most important functions is to provide a helping hand to those who are working, but are still struggling to meet life expenses, such as food, rent, utility bills and household necessities.

Public assistance programs are funded through taxpayer dollars, so it’s in our best interest to ensure that the money is used for its intended purpose.

I have zero tolerance for recipients who abuse the welfare program by withdrawing cash from their Electronic Benefits Transfer card to pay for tobacco, alcohol, gambling and adult entertainment.

Senator O'Brien applauds $281,600 grant for violence prevention programming in the City of Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Senator Ted O’Brien praised a $281,600 state grant announced today that will enable Rochester’s Action for a Better Community (A.B.C.) to work with local law enforcement and youth to encourage nonviolent conflict resolution and discourage gang violence.  A state Division of Criminal Justice Services researcher will be working with A.B.C.

Senator Kennedy Demands Increased State Resources for Local Child Protection Services

At public hearing today in Albany, Kennedy says there’s an urgent need for additional state resources for local CPS agencies in light of recent child fatalities in Erie County. 

ALBANY, N.Y. – At a public hearing where state lawmakers explored the budget’s impact on human services, Senator Tim Kennedy, D-Buffalo, made a forceful plea for increased state resources for local child protection services in Western New York and across the state. In light of recent child fatalities in Erie County, Kennedy says there is a dire need for new support for child protection services.

SENATOR MARTINS CONGRATULATES THANKSGIVING ESSAY WINNERS

Senator Jack M. Martins congratulated the winners of the 2013 Seventh Senate District Thanksgiving Essay Contest that asked six grade students to write an essay about what they are most thankful for. A student from each school who captured the spirit of the holidays was invited to a special reception at the Hillside Library, where the students read their essays aloud. The students exhibited creativity and a sense of humility in discussing what they are most thanful for. Many wrote about their famlies, friends and children. Senator Martins thanked the students for their participation and congratulated them on an outstanding job.

Griffo: Time is Running Out to Cure E.B.T. Abuse

UTICA – Sen. Joseph A. Griffo today called on the state Assembly to support legislation that would prevent New Yorkers from using public-assistance funds on alcohol, tobacco, gambling or strippers.“New York has just 30 days left to prove it has tried to curtail E.B.T. debit card fraud and abuse, or lose out on $120 million in federal funding for needy families,” said Griffo, R-Rome. “It’s important that we pass this legislation now, so that those on public assistance who play by the rules aren’t hurt.”Media reports and public documents have proved that E.B.T.

Sen. Jose Peralta: It's Up to Senate Independent Dems To Bring DREAM Act To The Floor

As reported by the Daily News:

Sen. Jose Peralta, a member of the mainstream Senate Dems, actually sent a verbal bouquet the way of the four breakaway Democrats who help control the chamber with the Republicans.

Peralta (D-Queens) thanked the four for signing on to his bill to create a state DREAM Act.

But he also tried to put the pressure back on the four to secure whatever Republican votes are needed to ensure its passage.

“I look forward to working with them in helping our  Republican colleagues understand that the DREAM Act is the smartest investment that we can possibly make in workforce development and our state’s future, one that would pay for itself many times over.," Peralta said. “Their help in getting my bill to the Senate floor for a vote when the time comes will be critical to making the DREAM Act a reality.”

MS 577 Students Visit Albany

Senator Dilan joined nearly 50, 8th graders from Middle School 577 were in Albany to join other students, parents and teachers to call for a $1.9 billion increase in school aid as part of the upcoming Executive Budget. The Alliance for Quality Education (AQENY), Senator Dilan and more than 80 legislators mirrored the request in a letter to the Governor, citing sweeping education cuts over the last five years and the growing inequity between rich and poor school district throughout the state.

SENATOR MARTINS CONTINUES KID PIX PROGRAM AT THE MINEOLA LIBRARY

Senator Jack M. Martins continued the valuable Kid Pix program at the Mineola Memorial Library. Partnering with Nassau County, Senator Martins offered free identification cards to children. The cards have important information on them. The program has been highly successful with parents and children taking advantage of the service. The Senator has brought the program to the communities in the Seventh Senate District.

Senate Co-Leader Jeff Klein and Senator Diane Savino Urge State to Approve Mayor de Blasio's Universal Pre-K Plan

City Hall, Manhattan – Three days before the start of 2014 state legislative session, Senate Co-Leader Jeffrey D. Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) renewed his call for Albany’s approval of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s universal pre-k plan and released a new economic report detailing the major, long-term benefits of doing so. According to the report, An Economic Argument for NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Universal Pre-K Plan, New York City will earn a $3.7 billion return on investment if it enacts the program.
