FELDER URGES DE BLASIO TO RESTORE FUNDING TO PRIORITY 5, 6, & 7 CHILDCARE VOUCHER PROGRAMS

In the wake of recently published reports that the de Blasio administration does not intend to restore millions of dollars for certain after-school programs, Senator Simcha Felder (D-Brooklyn), Chair of the New York State Children and Families Committee, is calling on Mayor Bill de Blasio to reinstate funding to the Priority 5, 6 and 7 voucher programs, noting that cuts initiated under the Bloomberg administration disproportionately impacted the Orthodox Jewish community. Joining Senator Felder in his efforts to restore funding is Councilman David Greenfield (D-Brooklyn), who has taken a proactive stance in the City Council to reverse the earlier funding cuts.

Food Bank For Westchester Food Giveaway

Senator Stewart-Cousins regularly collaborates with the Food Bank For Westchester to make sure that the underprivileged living in her district don't go hungry. On Saturday, February 22nd, Senator Stewart-Cousins, along with Ground Works and members of the AME Zion Church, put the Food Bank For Westchester's mobile food pantry to use and gave away food to 100+ needy individuals and families living in Yonkers.

Senator Kennedy, Assemblyman Ryan Announce State Funding as Renovation Plans are Outlined at Boys & Girls Club on Buffalo’s West Side

State providing $150,000 grant through the Urban Initiatives program to support Boys & Girls Club renovation project.

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Senator Tim Kennedy and Assemblyman Sean Ryan today announced state funding to support major renovation plans for the Butler-Mitchell Boys and Girls Club, which is an important yet aging community asset on Buffalo’s West Side. Boys and Girls Clubs of Buffalo officials outlined their plans to improve the Butler-Mitchell Clubhouse and broaden its impact in the neighborhood. Kennedy said this major reconstruction project will help strengthen the West Side community and support families who call the neighborhood home.

I believe one of government’s most important functions is to provide a helping hand to those who are working, but are still struggling to meet life expenses, such as food, rent, utility bills and household necessities.

Public assistance programs are funded through taxpayer dollars, so it’s in our best interest to ensure that the money is used for its intended purpose.

I have zero tolerance for recipients who abuse the welfare program by withdrawing cash from their Electronic Benefits Transfer card to pay for tobacco, alcohol, gambling and adult entertainment.

Senator O'Brien applauds $281,600 grant for violence prevention programming in the City of Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Senator Ted O’Brien praised a $281,600 state grant announced today that will enable Rochester’s Action for a Better Community (A.B.C.) to work with local law enforcement and youth to encourage nonviolent conflict resolution and discourage gang violence.  A state Division of Criminal Justice Services researcher will be working with A.B.C.

At public hearing today in Albany, Kennedy says there’s an urgent need for additional state resources for local CPS agencies in light of recent child fatalities in Erie County.

SENATOR MARTINS CONGRATULATES THANKSGIVING ESSAY WINNERS

Senator Jack M. Martins congratulated the winners of the 2013 Seventh Senate District Thanksgiving Essay Contest that asked six grade students to write an essay about what they are most thankful for. A student from each school who captured the spirit of the holidays was invited to a special reception at the Hillside Library, where the students read their essays aloud. The students exhibited creativity and a sense of humility in discussing what they are most thanful for. Many wrote about their famlies, friends and children. Senator Martins thanked the students for their participation and congratulated them on an outstanding job.
