Senator Foley Protects Victims of Domestic Violence

Legislation sponsored by Senator Brian X. Foley (D – Blue Point) aimed at protecting the rights and security of victims of domestic violence has been signed into law by Governor Paterson.

The new law allows victims of domestic violence to request a court order that requires the Board of Elections to keep their registration records confidential. This means that victims will be afforded an added layer of protection in keeping their new address out of the hands of their abusers.

State Parks to Remain Open

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins announced that every State park and historic site will be open Memorial Day weekend, for the entire summer and well into next year. Senate Democrats were able to negotiate an agreement to restore full funding for all parks, fulfilling their promise to keep parks, campgrounds, historic sites and botanical gardens open for New York’s families.

Construction Begins on Midtown East's New Home to PS 59 and Whole Foods

MIDTOWN EAST — Officials broke ground Friday at the new, $500 million home to P.S. 59 and Whole Foods at 250 East 57th Street.

The 1.5 acre campus will house P.S. 59 and the High School of Art and Design when it opens in September 2012. A Whole Foods Market will take up 38,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor.

"In these tough financial times, it is absolutely critical that we look to the private sector to support our efforts at building new schools," Joel Klein, the schools chancellor, said in a statement.

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer Congratulates Local Girl Scouts for Winning Bronze Award

 

 

On May 11, 2010, Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) awarded Certificates of Merit to members of the Junior Girl Scout Troop 2694 and congratulated them on receiving the Bronze Award, the highest honor given to junior girl scouts.  The girls traveled to Albany as part of the New York State Girl Scout Legislative Network.
