Senate Majority Passes "Sunshine" Legislation To Hold Government Accountable

“Sunshine” Package Passes, Further Opens Legislative Process to Public

The New York State Democratic Majority took another step forward today in lifting the veil on state government records by passing a package of four Sunshine Policy bills which reform the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) and state Open Meetings Law. The package is designed to provide the public with greater access to information about State government as well as easier access to programs, processes and overall governmental activity.

Why No Public Negotiations?

We're beginning to hear the rumblings about a late state budget, which is exactly why many of us, over the past several weeks, have been calling for public negotiations over the final 2010-2011 state budget.

The fact is that legislative leaders are violating key elements of the state’s “Budget Reform Act of 2007,” which I myself helped develop and co-sponsored. 

The 2007 budget reform law established legal guidelines and timetables for the appointment of joint legislative budget conference committees to conduct public budget negotiations – all of which were ignored by legislative leaders last year and are being ignored again.

Web Analytics Report 2/13/10 - 2/27/10


This is the bi-weekly report on the New York State Senate’s web presence. Last week the website received a total of 54805 visits, up by nearly 1,00 since the last report and 2,200 over the last month. It had a bounce rate of 53%, higher than it’s long term average of 42%, and new visitors 70% of the time, higher than the long term average of 67%, and one point higher than the last report. The all time graph at the bottom of the first page shows that the average level of website activity has risen since the commencement of session in January and is experiencing similar amounts of activity as it experienced last year during session.

Led by Senator Klein, Task Force Demands Answers on Excessive Overtime Pay and Overhead Costs

ALBANY – The Senate Task Force on Government Efficiency, chaired by State Senator and Deputy Majority Leader Jeff Klein, probed officials from the State University of New York (SUNY) system at a public hearing Thursday regarding excessive spending on overtime pay and overhead costs. The hearing was the first of many the Task Force plans to conduct in an effort to examine spending at state agencies.

Public Budget Negotiations Needed, Winner Says

Albany, N.Y.–State Senator George Winner (R-C-I, Elmira) has joined many of his legislative colleagues to call on Senate and Assembly leaders to begin public negotiations over the final 2010-2011 state budget.
