SENATOR GALLIVAN REACTS TO DEC CONSENT ORDER WITH HILLCREST INDUSTRIES

Applauds Funding Of Attica Community Environmental Benefit Project

Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R,C,I – Elma) welcomed news this week that the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has finalized its consent order with Hillcrest Industries of Attica.

“The DEC consent order hopefully marks the beginning of the end of this long and arduous process that has tested the patience of the Attica community. I am especially pleased to see that the financial penalty levied against Hillcrest Industries will be used to fund an Environmental Benefit Project within the community, rather than merely transfer to the DEC’s bank account in Albany,” Senator Gallivan said.

Critical Student Health Program Receives State Funding

RICHFIELD SPRINGS, 04/05/13 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today announced that the 2013-2014 state budget includes, at his insistence, $150,000 to establish a Bassett Healthcare Network school-based health center (SBH) at Richfield Springs Central School.

“School-based health centers fill a great void in rural areas like those I serve,” said Senator Seward.  “Bassett Healthcare has developed a successful operating model, the largest rural SBH program in New York State, and expanding services to Richfield Springs Central School will mean healthier children and added peace of mind for parents who choose to utilize the care option.”

Caucus Says "Budget Falls Short"

While there are parts of the budget that are beneficial to the communities we represent, we are greatly disappointed that more was not done to address the needs of the most vulnerable New Yorkers. We were optimistic when many of our top priorities were mentioned as key priorities of the Governor in his State of the State. However, the actual results fell short.

We thank Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins for their leadership during budget negotiations for advocating for the poor, low-income and middle class New Yorkers, but their efforts are only part of the process.

Assemblyman Karim Camara, Chair of the NYS Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, and Asian Legislative Caucus Makes a Statement on Newly Released Marijuana Arrest Report

The report’s findings further prove the need for standardization of marijuana offenses. One million hours, over 440,000 arrests, at a cost over $75 million a year for taxpayers in the last decade is unconscionable. We cannot continue to let minor offenses like these ruin the future of innocent New Yorkers, particularly Black and Latino youth. The NYPD’s aggressive stop and frisk policies have led to a weakening of the relationship between the police department and communities of color. It is time to stop wasting millions of dollars in law enforcement resources on a failed policy, while detracting from the prosecution of serious crimes.
