Senate Passes Klein Bill to Strengthen Green Markets/ Increase Access to New York Grown Products

The State Senate Tuesday unanimously passed legislation sponsored by Senator Jeffrey D. Klein, (D-Bronx/ Westchester), that would expand local and regional green markets, like those in the greater Bronx area, and increase access to New York State grown fruits and vegetables.

Senate Passes Bill to Ban Salvia Divinorum

In an effort to protect the youth of New York State,  the State Senate today passed legislation, sponsored by Senator John Flanagan (R-C-I, East Northport), to ban the sale of the legal hallucinogen salvia divinorum.   Senator Flanagan renewed his efforts to ban the dangerous herb following media reports that Ryan Santanna, a 21-year old Roosevelt Island resident, had allegedly been smoking salvia divinorum before apparently leaping to his death in Roosevelt Island earlier this month.  This is the same legal substance that pop star Miley Cyrus was allegedly smoking in a widely distributed video clip in December of last year.

South Avenue Goes Blue for Colorectal Cancer Awareness

On Friday, March 4th, Senator Robach spoke at 'South Avenue Goes Blue for Colorectal Cancer Awareness'. During the event, free health screenings were given to the uninsured, ages 40 and older. South Avenue Goes Blue for Colorectal Cancer Awareness also featured remarks from cancer survivor Ronald Banks. 3/9/2011: Mental Health Matters Advocacy Day

Speakers included Assemblyman Felix Ortiz, Chair on Mental Hygiene, Senator Roy McDonald, Chair of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities, Senator Shirley L. Huntley, Ranking Member on Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities, Assemblyman, Jeffrey Dinowitz Chair of Aging and Mental Health Commissioner Michael Hogan. Also, we will hear from other leading experts discussing significant mental health issues.

We will also have the wonderful mix of MHA members dedicated to community based mental health services, our grassroots colleagues from AFSP, our colleagues in the community as well as several high school students whose schools have been directly impacted by suicide completion.

Senator Martins Presents LI Alzheimers Association Award to Karen Henley

Senator Jack M. Martins was given a very high honor by the Long Island Alzheimers Association by being asked to present the Advocate of the Year Award at the State Capitol. Senator Martins presented the honor to Karen Henley of Nassau County. Henley is a resident of the 7th Senate District and was chosen by advocates for her steadfast support and advocacy for the Long Island Alzheimers Association. The Association has awarded nearly $160 million to researchers seeking new methods of prevention, better treatments, and eventually a cure for Alzheimers.
