Statement of Senator Thomas K. Duane RE: Urgent Care Coming to Manhattan's Lower West Side via North Shore-LIJ and VillageCare’s Announced Partnership

Finally, after much advocacy and hard work, The North Shore-LIJ Health System (NS-LIJ) has announced a plan, in affiliation with VillageCare, to operate a 24-hour urgent care center at 121A West 20 Street on the Lower West Side of Manhattan. I and the community expect that the proposed facility will provide the highest quality, state-of-the-art urgent care possible and that the New York State Department of Health (DOH) will quickly approve the project.  That said, actions speak louder than words.  Nothing can be taken for granted.  We must remain vigilant until this facility is operational and we can be sure that it is providing the same level of high-quality, culturally sensitive care to all who need it regardless of their ability to pay.

Bill Extending Health Benefits for Volunteer Firefighters Signed by Governor Paterson

ALBANY, N.Y.— Governor David Paterson signed legislation sponsored by Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) that will extend cardiovascular health benefits for volunteer firefighters an additional five years (S.2769A).

“Everyday volunteer firefighters across New York put their lives on the line to protect our communities,” said Senator David Valesky. “Extending their benefits enables them to continue to protect the places they live, without compensating their health coverage.”

According to the law, firefighters stricken with heart problems while performing their duty are allowed to claim benefits unless substantial evidence is given that their activity as a firefighter did not cause the heart disease.

8/15/2010: Bone Marrow Drive

State Senator Shirley L. Huntley (D-Jamaica)attended a bone marrow drive accompanied by rap impresario and entertainer Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson. The event took place in Southeast Queens at 50’s Community Garden. The bone marrow drive was inspired by the story of 11-year-old leukemia patient, and Broadway’s Lion King star Shannon Tavarez. Unfortunately Shannon still hasn't found a bone marrow match, so when Senator Huntley heard of the event, she came out to register as a potential marrow donor. Senator Huntley also wanted to bring attention to the need for people to register and get swabbed to see if they could be candidates to donate marrow for Shannon and others suffering from leukemia. 50 Cent sponsored the registry through his G-Unity Foundation.
