Padavan Joins With HS Students at Relay For Life Event

On Saturday afternoon, June 5, New York State Senator Frank Padavan (Queens) joined with local high school students and residents at the Relay for Life event at Cunningham Park.  Established by the American Cancer Society the event raises funds and increases awareness in the fight against cancer. Throughout the day teams compete to raise money for cancer research and education by walking around the park oval.  Senator Padavan with students from St. Francis Prep during the Relay for Life event at Cunningham Park on Saturday afternoon June 5, 2010.

Op-Ed- Helping Restaurants Help the Hungry by Senator Suzi Oppenheimer

Every night, millions of men, women and children in New York go to bed hungry.  The Food Bank Association of New York, a consortium of regional food banks throughout the state, estimates that in 2010, close to three million New Yorkers will receive emergency food assistance from food banks, soup kitchens, shelters and other emergency feeding programs.

Historic Agreement Reached Between New York Power Authority and North Country Officials

MASSENA (June 2, 2010) - New York Power Authority (NYPA) President and Chief Executive Officer Richard M. Kessel today was joined by several North Country officials at a ceremony marking the signing of an historic agreement to provide some of the most significant economic development benefits to the region in recent history. The agreement calls for the Power Authority to provide $16 million and 20 megawatts (MW) of low-cost hydropower for economic development purposes throughout St. Lawrence County.

Senate Passes Historic Bill To Protect Domestic Workers

The New York State Senate passed the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights (S2311D/Savino) making New York the first state in the nation to provide new standards of worker protections for more than 200,000 employees in an industry which has gone unregulated for decades.

This historic legislation guarantees protection from discrimination, notice of termination, paid sick days and holidays, and other basic labor protections long denied to nannies, housekeepers, and elderly caregivers employed in private homes.
