New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle, Chair of the New York State Senate’s Higher Education Committee will chair a first of its kind Higher Education Budget Roundtable with members of the Senate’s Higher Education Committee as well as representatives of the State University of New York  (SUNY) including Senior Vice Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer Monica Rimai and other senior SUNY officials to discuss the 2011-2012 Executive Budget and its impact on the University system.

Polisseni Track & Field Complex Groundbreaking

On Friday, October 8th, St. John Fisher College held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Polisseni Track & Field Complex. The College is adding an eight-lane, 400-meter competition track with a grass infield. Components will be installed in the infield for shot put, pole vault, and long jump events. In addition, there will be bleacher seating for approximately 1,000 people, with locker rooms for the student-athletes and public restrooms.

Landmark “Dignity for All Students Act” Signed Into Law Law prevents discrimination and harassment against students on school grounds

(Jamaica, NY) Senator Shirley L. Huntley (D-Jamaica) announced the signing into law of legislation (S. 1987B) that would keep children from facing harassment and abuse at school.

The goal of the ‘Dignity for all Students Act’ is to provide all students with a safe and nurturing school environment conducive to learning by putting an end to harassment and discrimination based on, but not limited to, race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender, or sex.

Senator Foley Announces Agreement on SUNY Empowerment

Senator Brian X. Foley (D – Blue Point) announced today that through his own advocacy, and that of his colleague, Senator William T. Stachowski, a bicameral agreement has been reached on the SUNY Empowerment legislation.

“Higher education is a lynchpin in so many ways and we must ensure that our students are receiving the best possible education,” said Senator Foley. “Allowing some of our state’s institutions of higher learning, including Stony Brook University, to have flexibility in setting tuition rates and entering into public-private partnerships will allow the schools to offer smaller class sizes and greater educational opportunities for our students.”
