STATEMENT FROM SENATOR KEVIN PARKER ON THE SENATE VOTE ON THE NEW YORK STATE DREAM ACT

(Brooklyn, NY) - “Today, I stood with 29 other New York Senate Democratic Senators to vote in favor of the NYS DREAM Act.

This piece of progressive legislation was brought to the floor earlier this evening and if passed, would have ensured immigrant children, in search of the American dream through educational access and financial aid, the road map to success.

Senate Republicans failed our young people. Not a single member of the Republican Conference voted yes. Not a single member of the Republicans voted yes for opportunity or yes for equality.

Statement From State Senator Gustavo Rivera On The Senate Vote On The New York State DREAM Act

"Today's failed attempt to pass the DREAM Act once again demonstrates how the Independent Democratic Conference is not able to deliver bi-partisan support for progressive legislation. Ultimately, this is a Republican-led coalition and not a bi-partisan one. It is truly disappointing that we continue to deny thousands of young New Yorkers the resources necessary for a quality education and a brighter future."

Budget Conference Committees Convene

ALBANY, 03/17/14 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) has been named to the education and higher education budget conference committees which held their first meetings today in Albany.

Regarding his education conference committee assignment Senator Seward said:

"The senate budget resolution increases school aid by $811.9 million from last year with a $541 million restoration of the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) which has hurt our area schools.  Eliminating the GEA has been a top priority for me, and, to date, the senate is the only legislative branch to fully target this unfair hit on our area schools."

Senate Budget Resolution Meets Real Needs

ALBANY, 03/14/14 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today commented on passage of the senate’s budget resolution for fiscal year 2014-15:

“The senate budget plan fulfills many of the priorities expressed to me by families, employers, and community groups that make up my senate district.  Approval of the plan also means we are on track to pass an on-time state budget for a fourth straight year.

“Among the highlights - property tax relief to combat the greatest expense families and business in New York face; education aid that will support our neediest schools; and job creation incentives which will help boost economic development.

FROM THE DESK OF SENATOR JACK M. MARTINS

Say No! to Attica University

If you’re a Seinfeld fan like me, you’ll probably remember the episode “Bizarro Jerry,” in which the gang’s world seems strangely inversed. The writers were apparently inspired by the Bizarro World found in the old D.C. comic books where good and sensible things were shunned and stupidity and recklessness were embraced.

You read that correctly. Our Governor has actually proposed providing prison inmates with free Associates and Bachelors degrees and he’s serious. His public relations machine is already out there making the argument.
