SENATOR MONTGOMERY HONORS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD RECIPIENT DOROTHY BURNHAM, A BROOKLYN “RENAISSANCE WOMAN”

The lifetime achievements of Brooklyn native Dorothy Burnham were recognized and lauded by NYS Senator Velmanette Montgomery (D-Brooklyn) during the reading of a Senate resolution, which was unanimously passed by the full Senate during the final days of the 2011 Legislative Session. The resolution paid tribute to Dorothy Burnham’s many notable contributions to our public education system, the advancement of civil rights, and to the promotion of racial and economic equality. Ms. Burnham was also honored for her designation as recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the New York Friends of the People's World. “Dorothy Burnham is a Renaissance Woman,” said Senator Montgomery.

Wedding bells ring for gay New Yorkers

Queens Chronicle quoted Senator Gianaris on the historic passage of the Marriage Equality Act.

It is said that marriage marks the beginning of the rest of your life, and for gay and lesbian New Yorkers, Friday night was nothing less than a fresh start.

“We are now being treated as fully equal citizens,” said gay Councilman Danny Dromm (D-Jackson Heights), touting the passage of state legislation legalizing same-sex marriage. “Having the option just makes us more whole as human beings, whether we choose to get married or not.”

In bars and in clubs, in homes and on the steps of City Hall, New Yorkers from all walks of life celebrated.

SENATOR GIANARIS APPLAUDS HISTORIC PASSAGE OF MARRIAGE EQUALITY ACT

Queens, NY – Senator Michael Gianaris was proud to be one of the 33 votes in favor of the Marriage Equality Act, which passed the New York State Senate on Friday, June 24 by a vote of 33-29 and was signed into law by Governor Cuomo.

New York is now the sixth state in the nation to legalize same-sex marriage, giving LGBT couples the same domestic and human rights as heterosexual couples.

“Today, New York reclaimed its mantle as the nation's human rights leader. I am proud to be one of the 'yes' votes that made marriage equality a reality in our state,” Senator Gianaris said. “May our example set the tone for the rest of the country so that all Americans can enjoy the same rights and privileges.”

Family Members Seek Justice For The Wrongfully Convicted

Senator Gianaris for years has been advocating for a "Peace Commission" to review the cases of potentially wrongfully convicted individuals in order to decrease the number of cases of wrongful conviction in New York.

Dozens of family members stood on the steps of City Hall Thursday, shouting the names of related prisoners that they say have been locked up for no reason.

"I know he is innocent, and that's what hurts," said Louis Holmes, father of a current inmate.

Family members and activists say Albany leaders need to form what they called an "Innocence Commission," a panel with subpoena powers to investigate the cases of inmates who claim they're not guilty and should be set free.

Sex and the City Star Cynthia Nixon Lobbies Lawmakers on Marriage Equality

 

Senator Montgomery is joined by Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon who traveled to the New York's State Capitol on Tuesday, June 14 to urge lawmakers to pass a marriage equality bill. The bill was approved by the Assembly that day.

Senator Montgomery, a long-time supporter of marriage equality noted that proponents of the bill have managed to close a vote gap in the Senate in a very short period of time but that the bill is still one vote shy of victory.

Senator Perkins Stands Up for Tenants

On Monday, June 13th 2011 Senator Perkins produly stood in unity with many tenants and tenant rights advocates outside the Governor's office to fight for real rent reform. Shortly thereafter, many individuals including Senator Perkins, were arrested on the charge of disorderly conduct.

A substantial contingent of elected officials, labor leaders, and other advocates hosted a press conference Wednesday to show support for marriage equality in Queens, N.Y., a borough represented by two undecided state senators key to passage of the legislation.

Serrano Joins Marriage Equality Advocates on Steps of the Bronx Courthouse

Senator José M. Serrano today joined government colleagues and gay rights advocates on the steps of the Bronx Courthouse, to urge lawmakers to vote in favor of a Marriage Equality bill.  "It's a travesty that in this day and age there are people among us who don't have the same rights as others," said Senator Serrano. "Marriage Equality is one of the most critical civil rights issues of our time, and we must not back down until we have equal rights for all the people of New York State"The press conference was organized by Brida Bronx Rainbow Independent Democratic Association, Bronx Marriage Equality Now, the Bronx Community Pride Center, and Bronx District Leader Kenny Agosto.
