Queens Senator Peralta urges for inclusion of Dream Act in budget

Queens State Senator Jose Peralta has been a sponsor of the New York Dream Act for the last two years.  The legislation would expand the state's TAP (Tuition Assistance Program) to include undocumented students who qualify.  The Assembly allocated $25 million in their one house budget, but it was not included in the Senate's version. 

Peralta sat down with us to talk about why the Dream Act should be in the final budget and in his disappointment with Jeff Klein, the leader of the Independent Democrats who run the chamber with the GOP, who opted not to include the legislation in the 2013-14 fiscal plan.

Opportunity Centers to Help Immigrants Fully Participate in New York's Civic and Economic Life

The Office for New Americans, the first statewide office with a sole focus to assist our state's immigrants in their efforts to contribute to the economy and become a part of the family of the New York has opened locations in Brooklyn and statewide.

The cornerstone of the Office for New Americans is a network of 27 neighborhood-based Opportunity Centers, hosted within existing community-based organizations, throughout the State. The centers will help New Americans learn English, prepare them for the U.S. citizenship exam, and help them start and grow businesses so they can fully participate in New York State’s civic and economic life.

Department of Financial Services to Speek Resolution of Insurance Claims in Areas Affected by SANDY

The NYS Department of Financial Services (DFS) is setting new rules to speed the processing of insurance claims in areas affected by Storm Sandy. The new regulation reduces the amount of time an insurer can delay its decision on a claim, and requires insurers to report to the Department on how many claims it is delaying and the reasons for the delays.

Governor Cuomo Outlines 2013-2014 Executive Budget to Maintain Fiscal Responsibility and Continue to Invest in Economic Growth

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo unveiled the proposed 2013-14Executive Budget and Management Plan that builds on two years of balanced, fiscally responsible budgeting and invests in economic development, education reform, rebuilding after Superstorm Sandy, provides support to local governments and school districts, and includes no new taxes or fees.

Highlights of the Executive Budget:

· Eliminates $1.3 billion budget gap with no new taxes or fees. The expected gap for 2013-14 was projected to be $17.4 billion prior to the last two responsible budgets.

· Holds spending increases below 2 percent for third consecutive year.

Senator Serrano Co-Sponsors Immigration Services Roundtable

Senator José M. Serrano co-sponsored a roundtable discussion for local community organizations on how to protect the community from immigration services fraud. Assistant Attorney General Roberto G. Lebron from Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman's Office provided a presentation outlining the types of frauds being committed against the immigrant community and how we can best address these persistent issues. The event also included a Q & A session with the Attorney General's office regarding the changing climate of immigration services.
