Muslims open Astoria center

The Times Ledger reports on the opening of the Muslim American Society's community center. Senator Gianaris spoke at the event and he believes these community centers are important for the future immigrant generations moving to the neighborhood.

Astoria has long been defined by its ethnic groups — first it was the Italians, then the Greeks — and last week the neighborhood’s Muslims took a large step toward establishing themselves with the grand opening of the Muslim American Society’s community center on Steinway Street.

MAS is a nationwide, nonprofit, religious, social and cultural organization, and for years the Queens chapter operated out of the Dar Al-Dawah mosque at 35-13 23rd Ave.

SENATOR BALL FEARS NEW YORK WILL BE LESS SAFE WITH INTRO 656

Luck and political correctness does not substitute smart public policy when it comes to Homeland Security. As we pass the 10 year anniversary of 9-11-2001, some are beginning to look past the sad reality that New York City remains terrorist target #1 on most days. In an odd move, completely devoid of commonsense, the New York City Council has now accepted into law an ordinance No. 656 that mandates all city jails to completely ignore certain Immigration and Customs Enforcement federal detainers, thereby ending life-saving compliance with the federal government.

Governor Cuomo Issues Executive Order to Improve Access to State Services for Non-English Speakers

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo issued an Executive Order requiring state agencies that provide direct public services to offer free interpretation and translation services to members of the public for vital forms and instructions.

Based on census data, the services will be offered in Spanish, Chinese, Italian, Russian, French, and French Créole.

Approximately two and a half million New Yorkers do not speak English as their primary language and have limited ability to read, speak, write, or understand English. This presents potential barriers when trying to access important government benefits or services.
