Lifesaving Legislation Receives Senate Approval

The New York State Senate today passed potentially lifesaving legislation (S.2387) that would allow emergency medical technicians (EMTs) to carry an automated external defibrillator (AED) in their personal vehicles. “Clearing the way for trained first responders to carry AEDs at all times could be the difference between life and death for a heart attack patient,” Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta), Chairman of the Senate Insurance Committee said.  “By cutting away bureaucratic red-tape and ensuring trained emergency professionals have the tools they need lives can be saved.” Current law does not permit EMTs to possess and use AEDs while they are off-duty, unless they are specifically licensed as a public access defibrillator provider.

Save on Auto Insurance, Cut 'Fraud Tax'

ALBANY, 02/08/11 – Fraud Costs New York, a statewide coalition dedicated to curbing the rampant auto-insurance fraud that costs New Yorkers millions of dollars each year, today praised State Senator James Seward for introducing legislation that would reduce fraud, abuse and the associated costs in the New York no-fault system.

New Yorkers now pay the fourth highest premiums in the nation for auto insurance due in large part to an outdated system that is rife with fraud and abuse.  In 2010, no-fault fraud cost New Yorkers more than $241 million, a cost absorbed by all drivers in the form of higher premiums.

IDC Releases Plan to Fight Auto Insurance Evasion

Fraudulent Practice Cost NY Drivers Millions, Puts Strain on State and Local Governments

The Independent Democratic Conference today unveiled comprehensive legislation to fight the widespread and fraudulent practice of auto insurance evasion. This practice, where drivers illegally register their vehicles in other states in order to pay lower automobile insurance rates, drives up premiums for law-abiding drivers, robs the state and municipalities of millions of dollars in revenue, and makes enforcement of existing motor vehicle laws more difficult.

“This is no little white lie,” said Senator Diane Savino, (D-Staten Island/ Brooklyn). “ If you live here, but register your car out-of-state, you're not only committing fraud, you're also making things more expensive for your neighbors. With our legislation, the Independent Democratic Conference is looking to end this harmful practice and to help the millions of New Yorkers who play by the rules.”

Current law requires all drivers who live in New York State for more than 90 days to register their vehicle with the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The IDC additionally released a startling new report on this topic.

KLEIN FIGHTS FOR HOMEOWNERS AGAINST UNNECESSARY INSURANCE COSTS

Throggs Neck seniors Lenore and Dominick Marano avoided being charged more than a thousand dollars in unnecessary insurance costs thanks to State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester). Klein worked with the Maranos' mortgage lender to help fight a nearly $1,400 increase in their annual flood insurance premium.
