LEWISBORO LEDGER: LEGISLATORS LOOK AHEAD

Citizens across the country are concerned about the nation’s high unemployment rate, and those concerns, which are undoubtedly shared by many Lewisboro residents, are being heard loud and clear by the town’s political delegates.

Lewisboro’s representatives at the county, state and federal levels recently spoke to The Ledger about their goals and priorities for the next year, and employment was their first topic of discussion.

“The number one theme, of course, is job creation in our Hudson Valley and across the United States,” Congresswoman Nan Hayworth, 19th District, said this week.

It’s Ronald Bullock’s career dream to be a chef and a business owner.

But the former construction worker hasn’t had steady employment since 2008, and he needs to make money before he can start a small business, the 43-year-old married Walden resident said.

That’s what brought him 25 miles to the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Work Local First job fair Wednesday at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel.

Senator Ball Accepts Applications at Dutchess County Job Fair

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – (09/21/11) – Senator Greg Ball (R, C – Patterson) today teamed-up with the Dutchess County Chamber of Commerce to help local people find jobs. The Senator attended a job fair in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. where he accepted applications and resumes for positions open within his Senate office.

“Teaming up with the Chamber, and other employment resources, is critically important to getting people back to work,” said Ball. “At the state level, I’m calling on the governor to convene a Special Session focused specifically on jobs. We simply cannot wait until January to address this crisis,” added Ball.

Peekskill, N.Y. – (09/20/11) – Senator Greg Ball (R, C – Patterson) was in Peekskill last night, speaking publicly for the first time about his call for a Special Legislative Session on job creation. The Senator addressed the Peekskill Common Council, along with a group of engaged residents. Senator Ball has spent the past three months touring the 40th Senate District, providing a legislative update to residents and elected officials. But with the number of people applying for unemployment benefits at a three month high, the Senator decided to shift the focus of this recent meeting to job creation and growth.

Senator John DeFrancisco is pictured with staff members from Medical Answering Services in Syracuse.  The company, which provides Medicaid transportation management services throughout New York State, has announced the creation of 80 new jobs in Syracuse.

Governor Cuomo & U.S. Treasury Department Announce $55 Million in Federal Funding for Small Business Credit Programs

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that the U.S. Department of the Treasury has approved New York's State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI) application. This will allow the state to access $55.4 million in federal money to fund three new small business lending programs.

Keep WNY's Post Offices Open! Sign the Petition!

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Citing the damage it would do to the Western New York economy, Senator Timothy M. Kennedy, D-58th District, is urging the United States Postal Service to reverse its course as it considers shutting down operations at the William Street Post Office in Buffalo. Senator Kennedy is also encouraging the Western New York community to sign an online petition that calls on the USPS to “Keep WNY’s Post Office Open”. Individuals signing the petition will have their names added to an opposition letter that will be sent to Postmaster General.

GIANARIS LAUDS FILM/TV PROGRAM JOBS

Queens Gazette wrote about the thousands of jobs the film industry, aided by the film tax credit which was championed  by Senator Gianaris, has brought to New York. 

State Senator Michael Gianaris (D–Astoria) had high praise and satisfaction for a program he supported which has created many jobs in his district and elsewhere in New York state.

Gianaris pointed out that the New York State Film Production Credit, which rewards companies that produce films and TV shows in the state with a tax credit, also creates jobs. Gianaris was a lead supporter when the legislation was created and later expanded.
